Overscan for DSLR
« on: 2014 February 22 10:08:32 »
Hi all,

I wanted to try and understand the overscan setting a bit more.  I started saving my images in FITS instead of RAW CR2 (Canon).  The typical dimensions of an image are 5184x3456.  When opening a FITS image (from Sequence Generator) instead of a CR2, I'll see the entire dimensions of 5280x3528.

Looking at a flat, it's obvious the oversan region is on the left and top portions of the image (can't really see in the image but a couple of white lines at the top and the rest is black).  Naturally I'd like to crop that portion and cropping the first 96x72 pixels should work fine.

In the overscan settings, what's the right way to configure this?  In the image region, I put 96, 72, 5184, and 3456 as shown in the image.  Should I check an overscan checkbox and enter something there?  Unsure of what the source region and target regions are.

Thanks much,
Brian

Based on some other posts, I tried the following and the resulting image (run through batch preprocessing) seemed to be cropped correctly -- no real difference I can observe visually, but that's just a casual observation.  My chief concern was that leaving all the overscan info there messes with the image statistics.

Do these settings look correct if I'm trying to crop 96x72 from the left/top of the image?  Again, total image is 5280x3528, and I want the "bottom right" 5184x3456.

Thanks much,
Brian
