Just an update here. This seems to have started to happen less frequently - not sure why - maybe just chance. But it happened again last night. I can't see any way of explaining this in terms of hardware failures. Possibly a bug in the GUI toolkit (is it QT?), but there is clearly something happening at the PixInsight level too, as the following sequence always (n=10-ish) occur together:

  •   Double-click background, choose which file to open, nothing opens. This happens with either style of file chooser.
  •   Try to open the file again. This time it works
  •   The image opens with a light blue tab (the tab is normally grey).  I'll try to remember to get screenshot of this next time.  Is there any situation in a normal workflow where the tab is blue like this?
  •   The mouse pointer is completely invisible when over the images, and some other overlays are not shown either. For example, a preview's name appears but the bounding box does not.

The workaround when this happens is to close and open PI, and hope it doesn't happen again.

I just encountered an error on opening the file. Like it was said earlier, first opening didn't work, and with second opening mouse disappears.
I have noticed one interesting thing. In process console is the wrong hour. It shows 1 hour back from the real time of opening the PI.

And of course, the blue tab is also here.

I have just given up after three hours playing hard with PixInsight 1.8.3.1123 on a clean installation of OS X 10.10.1. The machine is a 2013' 27-inch Core i7 iMac with 32 GB of RAM. It works without any problems. I have opened and worked with hundreds of images of different formats, color spaces and bit depths. I have loaded and saved lots of complex projects. No problems at all, with just these two exceptions:

- Files dragged from Finder are always sent as reference URLs on Yosemite. These are not handled by the current version of PixInsight. See: http://pixinsight.com/forum/index.php?topic=7789

- When you iconize an image window and the newly created icon is located over another image, the icon is not drawn correctly. This is a very minor bug; the icon is drawn well after clicking on it.

Other than these two issues, PixInsight's GUI seems to work faster on Yosemite than on the previous version 10.9 of OS X. I have been unable to reproduce anything similar to what you have reported... and I have tried!

Just for sanity, have you tried to reset all preferences to default settings? Select Edit > Global Preferences from the main menu. On the Preferences tool, click the Reset button (bottom right corner) and then Apply Global (blue sphere icon).

I have managed to reproduce the problem. When I clicked on a PI shortcut, PI didn't start. When I clicked the second time, PI started normally, but when I have tried to open the file it didn't open at first try, but in second, and problem with the mouse appeared again.

Maybe that's the problem. Your machine is a space ship compared to mine. Could that be a Win 7 related problem?

I have used Win 7 for ~ 4 years and can't recall ever having this problem but my system is also i7 core with 32GB RAM.

Maybe occasionally, dual core AMD with 4 GB RAM isn't enough?

Maybe some kind of screen sharing session would help to demonstrate and resolve the problem.

Re: Mouse disappears over image. -- DEBUGGING DATA and a WORKAROUND

So, I waited months before upgrading to Yosemite assuming that I would avoid the early bugs -- guess not.  Somehow I forgot to test PI before switching.  The first thing I found is at dragging a file over the window does not work.  I understand that the reason is understood and while I did not see this said I presume some future version of PI will fix that.  The more disturbing issue is this "mouse disappears" issue.  I can contribute a bit of info that might be of help.  I have only just played with PI a bit under Yosemite so this is a preliminary report.  I am running 01.08.03.1123.  The latest java sdk was installed (jdk-8u31-macosx-x64.dmg) as Yosemite seems to no longer install java and my bank needed it.

1) for some reason invoking PI from the spotlight search bar or double clicking on it's icon in the applications folder does not reliably start PI.  In fact, it seems to start it every other time!!!!!!  Or so I thought.  In fact it looks like if you try to restart it before the app is completely closed, but after its windows are all closed then it does not restart.  This is probably not a real issue.  But if you left a window up until the very end of shutdown the user might not be surprised with it seeming to not restart.  Since I alway auto hide my application bar it took me a few times to catch on.

2) If I double click on the background and then open a file from the file menu.  The file does not appear on the workspace, but I can select it with the widget in the lower left of the bottom bar.  It then becomes visible but the name tab has a blue background and the mouse cursor disappears over the image making PI unusable for many operations on the image.  Cloning it generates another unusable "blue tab" image.  Probably this is just some mode I'm unaware of and have not yet figured out how to toggle.  Once you do that once, you seem to be screwed.  Opening a file with the file open dialog box gives you the same blue labeled unusable image.  You are doomed to have to shutdown PI . Now, if you wait until PI is totally shutdown and restart it and remember to NEVER drag an image over its window -- this will be very hard to remember because that is how I always use it and NEVER double click on the backgound to open a file but alway proceed from the file/open dialog from the menu bar, then it looks like you are alright.  I am mystified as to why the later two paths behave differently.
