Mouse disappears over image.
« on: 2014 February 01 15:03:26 »
Could be user error/ setting error, but  ..... My mouse disappears when inside an image frame. Started with 1.8 1083. Mac OS Maverics

On any image, once the mouse is inside the image window the pointer disappears. Visible once outside of the image window. I can still click inside the image, for example using DynamicBackground extraction I can place the markers but I cannot see where the mouse is pointed.

any suggestions? :o

I sometimes have this problem but it existed before 1083 I think. I've not tracked down when exactly it happens for me (mainly as my main PI box isn't Mac)

I have this problem with every single image I open - it's made PixInsight almost impossible to use. Does anyone have a workaround or fix?

We have never been able to reproduce this problem on any platform, including Mac OS X 10.8, 10.9 and 10.10. It hasn't been reported again since the initial post, either. Anyone else is having this problem?

Does this include *any* type of image, as for example daylight images (JPEG, PNG, TIFF files, etc), or just raw CCD/DSLR data?

I had encountered that problem few times on Win7, and one was yesterday. If PI has error log I can send it to you.
I my case, problem occurs when PI does not open the image at first attempt. I double click on the workspace, select the file, click open, and image does not open. If I repeat the procedure, image opens, but the file tab which is located on the upper left side of the image, becomes blue. On that point mouse pointer disappears over the image.
When I restart PI, everything is OK.

I have never seen anything similar to this on any platform, including Windows 7, 8 and 8.1 on a variety of physical and virtual machines, and running very intensive stress tests.

I am sorry to know this is happening to you, but if I can't reproduce a problem, fixing it is very difficult...

.... and running very intensive stress tests.
I don`t know about the others, but I believe this problem is related with the fact that PI is unable to open the image.
A hypothesis. Is it possible that image is opened in memory, but PI for some reason doesn't  show that image on workspace, and when you open image for second time, then you have two images on top of each other?

If that happens, then something *really* strange is happening. In theory that is impossible under normal operation. As I've said we have never seen anything like this on any platform. This makes be think that this problem is hardware-related.

At this point, user comments of the "I have never seen this" kind would be appreciated. Given the way this issue is being reported, I tend to suspect that other users are having similar issues but don't report them. Not reporting a problem is definitely the best way to have it unfixed forever.

If that happens again, is there are an error log in PI, or some other file which I can send you?

Thanks for your help, Juan, Zocky and Harry. In fact, Zocky's post above is especially enlightening.

I do also see the issue where sometimes an image fails to load (ie you choose it in the open-file dialog and nothing happens), but I had thought it was unrelated. I now notice that when this does happen (~50% of the time, but I haven't worked out a pattern), then when I retry to open the image (which tends to succeed) then the tab on the top-left of the image *is* blue (normally grey) and the mouse will disappear over this image. Any further images opened in this session have the same problems (blue tab, no mouse). If I manage to get a file to open first time, then it's fine, and generally other files opened in the same session are fine. So, basically, it seems to depend on what happens to the first image opened.

I can give screen shots or casts if that would help, but not for a couple of weeks as I have a holiday. Anyway I have an (albeit tedious) workaround for now, which is just to quit and reopen PI whenever an image fails to open.

If the problem seems related to opening files (which is extremely strange), you can try using platform independent file open dialogs. Do the following:

- Select EDIT > Global Preferences from the main menu.

- On the Preferences tool window, select the File I/O Settings item on the left side.

- Uncheck the Use native file dialogs option.

- Click the Apply Global button (blue sphere) or press F6.

Now when you select File > Open, File > Save As, or make a double click on the workspace, PixInsight will use its own dialog windows instead of the native platform dialogs. Let's see if this solves the problem for you. Tip: On platform independent file open/save dialogs, you can drag a folder and drop it on the left side to create a shortcut that will be remembered across sessions.

Juan,

I don't recall seeing the mouse problem on my Windows 7 system over the last 2 years.

Thanks for the folder 'Tip:'. That I find very useful.

Thanks

Mike

Just to be on the safe side, are you sure that the cursor completely disappeared or is it just no visible anymore ?
When I use a boosted stretch on a L image, the cursor and the preview become often almost invisible on the background areas, as they have the same gray as the background. I have to change the stretch manually to make it visible again (or use the normal stretch).

Yes, it disappears. It looks like it's gone under the image.
