Traditional Hubble Palette
« on: 2014 January 14 01:00:05 »
Hello,

I have been playing with the pixel math formulas from other threads for blending narrow band images with decent results.

Is there a way to combine them to get the traditional green colour without the pink stars?

Cheers.

What colours were you hoping for in the stars? - if you want the natural colours you will need to combine the NB with an RGB image.

The pink or magenta stars are due to the typically weaker SII and OIII data.  The SII and OIII needs to be stretched more to match the Ha so the stars bloat in red and blue resulting in pink or magenta halos.

A few things you can try:
  • Use RGB data to provide natural star colour as Phil suggested
  • Desaturate the halos so the stars are all white
  • Reduce the SII and OIII star sizes using Deconvolution and/or MorphologicalTransformation so they match better

Cheers,
Rick.

I really like Morphological transform for tightening up stars.  If you are only going for stars and not extra detail in the target itself, MT is the way to go.
Really, are clear skies, low wind and no moon that much to ask for?
