Kayron,

Thank you for sharing your tutorial. I spent a good part of my Saturday reprocessing 4 year old DSLR data of the Horsehead and Flame region following the tutorial step by step. I was a bit skeptical at first, but soon realized there was much more in my data than I ever dreamed. Now of course I have years of old images to reprocess!

Thanks again!
Gardner

I'm glad it was helpful, Gardner! :)

That's a great tutorial. Thanks for posting. A unique set of requirements given the variation in features, particularly the trapezium in M42. Nicely done.

Thanks for creating such a great tutorial, I've been tinkering with PI for a few years now but never had results like the one I had following your tutorial.

The format is excellent and for the first time I think I actually understand what's going on  :D

After buying PI and watching the videos of Harry and follow them to get an understanding, I used your tutorial on your website today for my images.
Great tutorial, and I am sure after more practice I will dig deeper in the other possibilities (though I have only a 600D mod, so some things will probably never be applicable for me).

Cheers
Tom

Hi Kayron

Thanks for the tutorial, it worked a treat on my first image. After trying to get to grips with PI for some time this really helped. But..

I have just started to process my next image and I am trying to use ATrousWaveletTransform to remove the small scale noise on the RGB image as suggested. I have used the default settings, however this time I get dark rings around some of my stars. I understand from other info I have read that deringing may get rid of this and it is very common when using wavelets. The problem is selecting deringing ruins the RGB image completely.

Any ideas what I can do to continue to remove the small scale noise but not suffer from the dark rings? FYI I am using Canon 600D on this occasion with 50mm lens.

Many Thanks
Dave

I Dave,
Dark rings could be due to high Bias in the first layers. You have to play to find the correct values.
Also explore TGVDenoise or ACDNR tools that could be useful depending on the situation.
Saludos,
Alejandro.

Hi Alejandro,
I landed up not using ATrousWaveletTransform on this image after all. I used MMT instead. I think I was having problems as the image is of Scorpios's head and of course it transpired most of the "background" was actually gas/dust/nebula. I tried load of different settings to no avail which is a shame as it worked well on my first Cassiopeia constellation image. I'll experiment more on my final 25 images I need to process from my trip and see how I get on.
Thanks for the guidance.
Dave

What is the real difference between Atrous Wavelets Transform and Multiscal Median Transform?  They look so similar when you use them.

they are both wavelet based tools, but MMT is "newer"... check these threads:
