Resetting to base configuaration after restarting PI
« on: 2013 December 09 03:58:49 »
Hey folks,

I occasionally have to shut down PI (a tool button stops functioning or something else gets a little out of whack) but when I go to restart the program, I will often get a different screen setup loading which includes a (2) in the title bar.  Have sometimes gotten up to (5) before giving up and just rebooting the computer to get my base setup to reload.

Is there a handy way to get PI to revert to my base configuration from a restart everytime?

Thanks,

Jim

Hmm, this shouldn't happen on a regular basis.

It's true that if you execute the PixInsight Core application (very) quickly after closing a previous instance, the new application instance may attach to a new slot accidentally, and hence you get the (2). However, if this is happening so often on Windows, I'd strongly recommend a good virus/malware scan of your machine, since this is a symptom of a possible (not necessarily, of course) Trojan viruses attaching to running processes. The PixInsight Core application is particularly "good" at revealing these things, due to the way it manages multiple instances.

You can save a Preferences icon that you can reload and execute globally to restore your preferences.

Juan,

I will look into that.  Could explain a couple of my other weird issues.

Thanks,

Jim

Hi

This happens often in windows and as juan says the antivirus software ( avg) seems to hang on to the PI slot for a few seconds

All I have to do is wait 5-10 seconds before restarting pixinsight and all is ok

papaf,

Proof that old dogs can't be taught new tricks.  I got it all loaded up but missed all the simple things I couldn't figure out such as the key strokes to load multiple docs, etc.  So I went back to mother Microsoft (and a stern mother she is  >:D).  Did load up Start Menu 8 which makes everything work like Windows 7 again.

Sigh,

Jim

Juan,

You are a genius (I know, stating the obvious, but there you go).  When I gave up on my Linux experiment and reloaded Window8 I tried letting Microsoft take care of security.  Boy was that a mistake.  So on your advice I went to load Norton, but something in my system wouldn't even let me download the files.  After wiping the system and doing a clean reload of Windows 8, I then added Norton as a first step.  Under the new load, the problem has completely disappeared, and I am hoping several other snafus have been cured as well.

Thanks again for watching out for us minions,

Best,

Jim
