OS X Mavericks?
« on: 2013 October 22 12:33:54 »
Any info on PixInsight with OS X Mavericks? Has it been tested? Is it better? Worse? The same?

Right, inquiring minds would like to know!

I'm in the middle of a big processing project in PI right now, and think I should probably hold off on my FREE Mavericks upgrade until it's done, just in case.

On my early 2009 iMac Mavericks and PI have shown no issues. I haven't done much yet but things appear the same so far.

I have been using the developer GM for two weeks and had a couple of PI crashes, I think related to either network activity or waking up from sleep.

I updated to the real thing yesterday (should be identical, but who knows) and will reserve judgement until (or if) I get another crash. If I do get one, I'll certainly post log details for Juan's benefit.

In general, PI is working just fine under Mavericks. I just don't know if the crashes are PI related or not.

All that said, Mavericks is a quick and great upgrade!

Hi,
I have upgraded to Mavericks yesterday. At first, no visible problems with PI. However, I am currently going through a integration and the OS will systematically crash when integrating a 30 images calibrated, debarred, registered images from a Canon t3i. I am runing PI on a 2.66 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, Mid-2009, 15 inches MacBook pro equipped with 8 GB of ram and a home made fusion drive. Never had any issues beforeƩ. This hardware is the same for the last year or so. The memory settings I use for Integration a buffer size of 84MB (optimized for my camera file size) with a stack size of 6072 (optimized with my machine ram). The t3i makes files that are 3456 x 5184, typical cry file is 25MB and typical debarred FIT is 216.3 MB.
Any idea what is causing these crash?

Can you describe to symptoms of the crash? Error messages? Do you have to reboot?

Also, as a trouble shooting step I would eliminate the fusion drive. It wouldn't surprise me if Apple has inserted hairballs into Mavericks to block homemade fusion drives. Besides you may get better PI performance to keep your fusion drive separate and just dedicate the SSD to PI cache.

Hi,
By crash I mean a complete computer freeze. Nothing works. Mouse does not move. To kernel panic, no error message. Had to hold the power switch to reboot.
Some development: I was able to avoid the computer freeze by reducing the stack size to 4096. Do you think this freeze has to do with the new memory compression feature in Mavericks? And by using smaller stack size, you force the memory to stay active, preventing it's compression? During the process nothing else runs so at 6072, there is still room out of the 8 GB. However, it crashes. Only by reducing to 4096 it prevents.
Please let me know if you need me to test any scenarios or if you need additional log files.

Of course anything is possible, but my understanding of the memory compression is that it should not apply to active applications. I will try to reproduce your settings on my machine and see what happens.

One last info that came about:
Even with 4096 stack size, if I attach an external monitor, it freezes.

this is bad news, i'll bet it's a bug in mavericks regarding all this fancy memory managment stuff. i am going to hold off. i rarely install x.0 releases of apple stuff anyway.

I can't reproduce with your settings. By the way the console only reported using 3177 pixel stacks for 2485MB so maybe 6072 is excessive anyway. Our hardware is similar including camera (I use a 50D). I am still suspicious about your homemade fusion drive.

Normally I agree with Rob and I don't rush to upgrade but for some reason I took the plunge this time. Of course if nobody did then these things would never get figured out.

believe me i've been tempted! the siren song of free is calling!!

seems like on every machine i have, there is some software package or other that's at risk of not working anymore under mavericks, so i'm idling.

I'd still like to hear from Juan or the other big guns as to whether they have done any pre-release testing.

fair enough - juan has been really scarce lately though. hope he sees this and gets to load mavericks onto one of his machines.

Rob... DO IT, DO IT, DO IT!

 >:D

Seriously, if you are accustomed to working with Projects for important processing runs, you'll be fine. The Mavericks upgrade was a snap and has already made my machine better. What apps apart from PI are you worried about?
