Jim's PixInsight Cribsheet
« on: 2013 October 22 08:07:33 »
PixInsight World,

I thought I would payback a bit for all the help others have offered here  so attached you will find the Cribsheet I have developed and always keep handy whenever I am working in PixInsight.  It has two sections, the first is my current workflow and the bulk is made up of tool tips that I have collected from advice Juan and others have given here or that I picked up from Harry's tutorials.  As you can see it is up to Rev10 but could still use lots of improvement so I welcome suggestions on better ways to do things.

Since this is merely a compliation of other peoples' work I claim no ownership but offer it freely to others in the hopes they will find it handy as a reference tool.

Note due to the attachment rules, I have included both a PDF and a much less pretty txt version.  If anybody wants the Word version, just drop me an email and i will be more than happy to oblige.

Best,

Jim

Nice! This might be a very handy reference indeed when working with people on the basic workflow. Thanks for sharing!

Jim,

This looks handy - I'll add it to my PixInsight links page on my website.

Nice, what is the "31. Dark Structure Enhancement*" glad to learn about this script.  Any documentation anywhere on this?

On this overall list I also have a less advanced list and was told that the deconvolution should be on linear images.  Not clear from yours if this is in the right place....

Jerry,

Great question and I toss it out to the world.  In fact, it would be helpful to get someone like Juan or Carlos or one of the other old hands to give us their read on linear versus non-linear, namely which processes should be done before or after stretching and those where it doesn't make a difference.  You can get some of that piecemeal, but having it set out in a comprehensive listing would be immensely helpful.

Jerry,

Should have mentioned that the Dark Structure Enhancement script can be found under Utilities.  Its pretty straightforward in application, can create its own mask, and does a nice job if applied lightly.  I can't remember where I found out about it, but I am betting it was one of Harry's tutorials.

if you search the forum you'll find a post that is exactly as you describe - a list of processes and their applicability to linear and nonlinear images.

deconvolution must be done on linear data because there is a single PSF applied to the whole image. when you stretch an image, you change the PSF in different ways in different parts of the image due to the different SNR, different star sizes, etc. this makes that single PSF no longer applicable to the whole image. this is not to say that you can not run deconvolution on a nonlinear image; it will work, and it will sharpen the image, but it does not have mathematical meaning any more.

I think it would be a good idea to have pinned somewhere some lists of workflow.  Mine now must be 30 items long and I include all the settings for each procedure.  But, of course, it relates to my scope and what you are image processing.... LRGB versus narrow band.  Nonetheless, I think this is a major obstacle to acceptance of the use of PI...

Geoff,

Thanks for the reference to the thread.  Will definitely include the break down in Rev11.
