I'm writing this from a laptop with Windows 7 x64, where I've just made another attempt at reproducing these problems ... without success.
BEX errors are related to buffer overruns, which may be caused by memory access problems (a faulty DIMM module for example). If you Google for this problem,
this is the first result. As you see, BEX crashes may affect any applications, including explorer.exe (and in this case the whole operating system gets blocked).
This is another example with the
Excel application, and this one with the
NVIDIA control panel, both very similar to what you're experiencing with PI. You may find hundreds of similar cases. Maybe some of the answers given in these examples may help you.
