1.8 RC5 crashes when closing image Windows 7
« on: 2013 March 28 09:06:43 »
Hi guys, although the new version of Pixinsight is very nice and I am very happy with it, I am experiencing frequent application crash when closing the image (message "Program stopped working, wait...."). With previous version I did not experience this, only with the yesterday released RC5.

I have W7 64, loads of RAM and HDD space.

Hi,

Anybody else is having these problems? We have subjected RC5 to many stress tests on all platforms, and this does not happen on our development machines (virtual and physical machines running Windows 7 and Windows 8).

Can you provide a repeatable pattern, or a sequence of steps that we can use to reproduce this problem?

I have just tried to reproduce the problem again and I managed (third try:-)) with these actions:

Open RC5
Open file
Auto histogram
Star mask (smoothness 7)
Mask select/invert
Morphological transform
Deconvolution
Save image as
Close (image only)...CRASH

But the same crash happened to me also with other actions, so myslef I do not see any obvious connection between any concrete step and the crash itself.

Might be also of interrest that I run RC5 on different drive than the one with image library?

I have to emphasize that except of this bug, everything is very smooth and fast, and no problems during saving files. Just when I click the close cross in the corner, the message "Program did stop working, looking for the solution" pops, and the whole problem ends up with complete unordered closing of Pixinsight.

UPDATE: Have no idea if this has any relevance to the problem, but the crash also appears when I SAVE the file, try to close the image window and I get the message:

The image has been modified and is unsaved.
Unsaved pixel data will be permanently lost.
Close this window anyway?

And I click YES and Pixinsight closes whole session with the above mentionned "stopped working" message.

Hi,

I have tried (hard!) to reproduce this problem without success. Could it be related to the Deconvolution bug that I fixed yesterday with an update for all platforms?

Actually the crash appears anytime and with any actions.

I have tried another thing - to close the opened image via the FILE-CLOSE from the menu, and I have received this message:

PCL Win32 System Exception
At address 0000000000000000 with exception code C0000005 :
Access violation: invalid memory write operation at address 0000000000000000

Strange to me actually is, that I have W7 64 (I have completelly upgraded my equipment just because of Pixinsight:-))

Hi Jan,

Definitely, I cannot reproduce this problem. I can open, close, process and save any images on Windows 7 and Windows 8 (on any OS, indeed) without problems with RC5.

Check if you have any application running that may interact with PI. A misconfigured antivirus or firewall application can do magical things.

Anybody else is experiencing such a chaotic behavior?

Another crash experienced DURING "Dark structure enhance" script on the small jpg file.

I have tried to switch off most al of the apps on backround, no improvement. Can you pls suggest where exactly I should look in my system (by your general knowledge of W7...)

Maybe the same as http://pixinsight.com/forum/index.php?topic=5401.msg37186;topicseen#msg37186 ?

I am also getting crashes on closing images. Happened about 5 times this evening. I have only had it happen on closing images after they have been modified in some way.

I have tried to replicate it but have been unable to create a repeatable scenario although I have been saving as 16bit colour TIFFs and feel sure the problem lies there somewhere.

The problem repeats "most" of the time if I open a TIFF file, modify it (Histogram and HDR Multiscale transform) and then close it. It has not happened on a FIT (yet!)

Another instance.

Load 16bit TIFF (colour) or FITS file (mono)
Run Dark Structure Enhance script leaving settings as default.
Crashes reading Swap File every time.

As for the DSE script:

http://pixinsight.com/forum/index.php?topic=5401.msg37178#msg37178

Summarizing, the DSE script cannot be used on Windows. I don't have a workaround or a solution for this problem, since it is being caused by the operating system, and there's no way (to my knowledge) to fix it. The DSE script works without problems on Linux and Mac OS X.

I cannot reproduce the problem with closing windows. This does not happen on any of the Windows machines that we have.

When you get a crash, in the "Additional information" given by Windows, do you see the words "BEX64" or "StackHash" ?

Is there any fix to this? .... Ripley is unusable on my machine. I have had to go back to 1.7 which works perfectly using the same OS

Hi,

I cannot reproduce the problem, so I have no way to fix it. I only get BEX64 errors systematically with the DSE script on Windows. No other process or script generates them on my Windows machines, and I can open, close, process and save any kind of images without any problem with RC5 on all platforms, including Windows 7 and Windows 8, 64-bit and 32-bit versions.

Rest assured that I'm investigating and trying to find the cause of this problem. One thing that you can try is disabling your antivirus/firewall software temporarily and trying PI RC5 to see if this makes a difference. Let me know if this helps.

Hi, I have tried to disable the firewall and antivirus, but it did not help.

By the way regarding the dark structire enhance script - I am not sure it is unusable on windows, because I have been using the cript before on W7 32 without any problem. Only with my new W7 64 combined with latest pixinsight the script crashes.

Bit odd this problem isn't it?

It only happens when closing an image. Works fine on 1.7. I wouldn't have thought that closing an image would have changed that much between versions (said as a non programmer).
