1.8.RC4 Update repository error
« on: 2013 March 13 12:41:42 »
Hi Juan. I obtained error message after setup and startup of PixInsight.
---------------------------
PixInsight Update System
---------------------------
<p style="white-space:pre;">Unable to download repository information.</p><p>Check the error log below for details.</p>
---------------------------
OK   Hide Details...
---------------------------

When clicked on the link in your post (https://pixinsight.com/update/), I got the similar error:
Forbidden

Your IP address or the username/password you entered were not correct. Your request was denied as you have no permission to access the data on this server.

How to set username or password when obtaining data from repository?

Check the error log below for details.

The error log should provide more information. I have just checked the update system on all platforms, and it works without problems. Must be a network error or something similar.

For security reasons, we have disabled all directory listings on our web server. You cannot access a directory unless it contains an "index.html" or "index.php" document. Recently we have detected some 'bad boys' (to describe them nicely) trying to get something from our website, so we have decided to fortify it a bit more.

Yes, this is content of the error log:
https://pixinsight.com/update/: Network error: schannel: failed to setup extended errors

Nothing more. Previous versions (RC1-3) had no problem.

I obtained the same error on different network and provider. Maybe this is problem of my computer or computer settings.

Your Windows machine has a problem with secure connections (SSL/TLS). Please note that PI is not causing this problem. Microsoft has released a hotfix that may solve this issue for you:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/975858

A workaround is using the non-secure update repository. Follow these steps:

- From the main menu, select Resources > Updates > Manage Repositories

- On the Manage Update Repositories dialog, click the Edit button.

- Change the URL to "http://pixinsight.com/update/" (without quotes) instead of "https://pixinsight.com/update/"

- Click the OK button to confirm the new repository, and OK again to accept the dialog.

This should allow you to download regular updates (modules, scripts, etc.). However, if we release a core application update, it will always fail for you because a secure connection is now required in this case (we don't plan to release one of these for now, but we'll probably do in the future). So I encourage you to fix the SSL/TLS connection problem. Let's see if the hotfix works.

Hi Juan. Thank you for your help. Hotfix installed now and update is running. I don't know why this machine was not updated. Automatic updates are enabled and performed every month. Thank you once again.

Well, I am stuck again with this exasperating repository error.
This time it doesn't matter whether I have it set for secure or not.

I was unable to run the hotfix.

Any other suggestions other than just trashing this blasted machine?

Terry

Hi Terry,

For security reasons, PixInsight Core application updates require a secure connection (HTTPS). Even if you have set "http://pixinsight.com/" as your update repository, core updates will ignore that setting and will always download from "https://pixinsight.com/".

If Microsoft's hotfix cannot solve this problem for your machine, then there's nothing we can do to fix it. Please realize this is a Windows bug with SSL/TLS connections. It is not a PixInsight bug at all.

Well, I'd recommend not using Windows at all, but this isn't probably the kind of suggestion you're looking for  ::)

I would like to re-open this topic since I am having the exact same problem that Terry and others had (have).  Has there been any update to this problem?  I purchased Pixinsight only to find out that I cannot update it due to a Windows problem - but this is the ONLY application that I have encountered this "Windows" problem.  Surely, something can be done to remedy this.

If you Google for "schannel error" you'll see that there are lots of similar problems on Windows.

Do you have Windows 7 Service Pack 1 installed? SP1 should fix this problem.

I guess I am screwed with getting updates.  I have SP1 and am completely up to date with Windows 7 updates and the hotfix does not work for me.  Googling schannel error does confirm that this is a problem bigger than Pixinsight but I would hope that you guys can come up with a work-around or something.  There has got to be a way to get updates besides getting a new computer.

Since version changes require to download the full application again from the "software distribution" page, when Juan releases the final version of 1.8, you will (probably) be able to download and install it without problems.

In fact, I'll try to release a new RC7 version for Windows in September, just to solve this problem.

I don't know if this is connected or not, but I had a similar problem getting updates for Photoshop. It was not until I did lots of googling that I found out that error only occured if using a wireless connection to the internet, i.e. with a laptop. Plugging in a wired connection it updated fine.

Just worth a try if you are using a wireless connection.

Sorry Juan for using the Photoshop word here  :embarassed:

Nah, no problem. As long as you cite it to point out a problem with it, I'm glad  >:D

Jokes apart, speaking of Windows, I've seen really weird wireless connection problems so what you say is worth trying.
