PixInsight 1.8.0 RC2 'Ripley' Released
« on: 2013 January 21 15:32:36 »
Hi all,

I am glad to announce that we have just released version 1.8.0.957 RC2 of PixInsight for Linux, Mac OS X and Windows. The installation packages are now available to all users on our Software Distribution system.

Release Candidate Version

This is the second release candidate (RC2) of the final 1.8.0 version that we'll publish on February 2013 for all supported platforms (including FreeBSD). With RC2 we have made a huge effort to achieve a stable version. With the exception of a number of new tools and features (as the new Layers tool), RC2 is very close to the final 1.8.0 version. We encourage you to update all your PixInsight installations as soon as possible.

PixInsight 1.8 Codename 'Ripley'

Ellen Ripley is a warrant officer aboard the spaceship Nostromo in the 1979 science fiction film Alien, directed by Ridley Scott. As was the case with the previous version 1.7 'Starbuck', the new codename has been suggested by Fernando Ballesteros, a researcher at the Astronomical Observatory of the University of Valencia, Spain. When Fernando suggested us a list of possible codenames, we liked 'Ripley' because it characterizes well the courage and endurance that a new version of PixInsight will need to represent our excellence-driven concept of astrophotography.

How to Install the Release

This version is not available through the automatic updates system. You have to download the appropriate installation package(s) for your platform(s) from our Software Distribution system. Simply uninstall your current version and install the new one:

Windows: Select Start > All Programs > PixInsight Platform > Uninstall PixInsight to uninstall your current version. Download version 1.8.0.957 and install it.

Mac OS X: Remove the PixInsight.app application bundle from your /Applications folder. Download version 1.8.0.957, unzip the package, and copy the new PixInsight.app bundle to /Applications.

Linux: Remove your previous installation directory, download version 1.8.0.957, and unpack it (tar -xzf). This will generate a new PixInsight directory with the new application.

Information on New Features

For more information, please visit the Release Information board on this forum, where we are going to describe the improvements and new features in this version.

We hope you enjoy this new release. Please help us by testing this new version and reporting any bugs or problems you may find. Thank you!

Thanks Juan,
Is it possible to run 1.7 and 1.8 concurrently on Win7?

Nicely, on the Mac, you don't have to kill your old install, since it was PixInsight32.app and/or PixInsight64.app, and this is just PixInsight.app. So I have 1.7 and 1.8 running simultaneously. I'm hoping to switch fully over to 1.8 now.

Not a valid Win32 application

Version 1.8.0 RC2 has been built with Microsoft Visual Studio 2012. The problem is that I forgot to link the 32-bit executables with the correct runtime to support Windows XP (see this document for more information), so the 32-bit version only runs on Windows Vista and later. Right now I'm rebuilding the whole platform with the XP runtime, and will update the installation packages later today. Sorry for the inconvenience.

Please note that both 64-bit and 32-bit versions of PI 1.8.0 RC2 run perfectly on Windows Vista, 7 and 8. This update refers exclusively to compatibility of the 32-bit version with Windows XP (which, by the way, we don't support officially).

==================

PCL 2.0.1 is now available:

http://pixinsight.com/developer/pcl/download/PCL-02.00.01.0557-20130121.zip

The online PCL reference documentation is also up-to-date:

http://pixinsight.com/developer/pcl/doc/html/

I am waiting until RC2 gets a bit more tested by the community to make an official announcement, along with PCL 2.0.1. There lots of new features in PCL that I'll describe on the development forums. Time to announce and describe everything, now that we have a stable release! By the way, Script Editor and CodeEditor fully support Python syntax highlighting now (just specify a .py suffix in your code) :)

Hi Cristoph

I'll be on vacations the next two weeks (starting tomorrow). I hope we will integrate some of the processes in those modules to the standard package soon, but meanwhile I'll recompile them for PCL 2.0 as soon as I come back.
Regards,

Carlos Milovic F.
