Some little processing to share with the forum
« on: 2013 January 20 03:59:49 »
Until now the 90% of my Pixinsight knowledge comes from the web, expecially from this forum, so I wanted to share the processing of my last picture, the M42 nebula area, just to pay something back to the web.

The processing comes from some tweaking of the multilayer technique described by RBA on his site (thanks Rogelio :D) and I hope that it can be useful to someone, even only to asses if the processing is wrong or not :D

You can find the technique here

The image of Orion Sword is posted in the gallery forum, I don't know if it is allowed to post it also here.

Emanuele.

Excellent Emanuele!!!!!!

How much did using a cooled camera help in developing such a beautiful image (noise/stretching etc)?

But from what I can judge from the amount of stretching...u must have extremely good SNR.....(should u wish to share this data with the rest of us who are suffering from months of cloudy nights...u would be appreciated greatly)

Thanks for sharing your technique. Great timing as I've been gathering data for M42. It would be great if this could be packaged and saved under examples and tutorials for others in the future. Just for clarification did you use version 1.7 or 1.8RC?

Thanks again.

Thank you everybody, your appreciation is the best reward to the time I spent in writing the processing sequence!

I will continue to put other material on the site about the processing of other images (actually there are some post regarding other images processing, but are only in italian language).

Regarding the PI version I'm using the 1.7, I've not yet upgraded to the 1.8. I've filled almost all the hard disk space on my pc, so maybe I will get another pc and then install the new PI version.

Regarding the cooling of the camera, the jump from an un-cooled to a cooled DSLR is huge, data is very clean and of course the stretching capabilities is higher than the one of a "traditional" DSLR.

If you need some informations on dark statisics please ask, I've never gone into that, so I don't even know how to do it :-[

Emanuele.

Emanuele,
do you know the sensor temp of the cooled DSLR (either the absolute temp OR degrees below ambient)?
You can go to perhaps to a dark frame and measure Process-statistics

Great image.  I read through the tutorial quickly last night, but for some reason I can't get to your site now.

Excellent image and processing. Thanks a lot for taking the time writing an explicit (and great!) tutorial.
But one question: Do you chose the values for the MMT by trial and error?
Thanks
Raymond

Your site seems to be working again.  This is a great tutorial (thanks for all the screen captures - those help a lot) and one I'll use on my own Orion data to get at the faint nebulosity in that region.
