Help with NGC300

Hi All,

I have collected 15 images of NGC300 at 5 min each and have tried processing the resulting integrated image. I do not seem to be able to get a good result. I would appreciate it if someone could take the time and try processing this for me. I would like to attach the initial integrated fits file and my best attempt as a jpeg is attached.

The jpeg is a result of DBE, Background Neutralisation, Colour Calibration, Atreous Wavelets and Histogram stretch in that order.

Can you advise how I can upload the fits file (60 Mb)? Or alternatively, someone may be able to walk me through the process?

Hi Alejandro,

Great! I was a little unsure I had done it correctly. The images were taken with a QHY-8 single shot colour camera using a GSO 6" Astrograph on a Skywatcher HEQ5 mount using autoguiding. I will be most interested to hear your comments and suggestions.

Hi Grant, something seems to be wrong in the debayer of the images. Could you please check if the images you have selected for integration, are correctly debayered?

There does seem to be problem with the debayering in PI and I am trying Nebulosity and AstroArt for comparison. I will advise if I find out what is wrong.

I have pre-processed the files in AstroArt to an integrated RGB, then used the histogram and curves in PI. The result seems much better so I must have a problem with the pre-processing I am doing in PI. I have attached a small jpeg to show the current result.

Hi Grant,

It seems you are using RGGB as debayer pattern in PI but I think that the correct one for your camera might be GBRG.
I suggest to check it and debayer your calibrated images with BatchDeBayer selecting that pattern.
After that, the alignment and Integration in PI will give a good image to be processed.

yes, I think you are correct. I have been trying a number of options and the GBRG seems the best one. Would you suggest the superpixel or VGN method for debayering?

I use VNG in it works fine in my Canon image. Also is the default method that PixInsight used for debayering.
You might want to take a look at the definitions of each one in the documentation of the tool.

I have re-processed the image and it looks a lot better. Shows up my poor focus when I crop and enlarge!
