Color Calibration Issue - M82
« on: 2012 April 21 10:22:35 »
I guess I'm doing something basically wrong again but have been over the tutorials several times and the results are the same. I have an image I took of M82 using a monochrome camera (STL-11000M) with LRGB filters. The total time of the image so far is 11 hours of 20 minute subs being used. These are 12 green, 11 blue and 10 red 20 minute images. I have aligned them to the 1st red image and saved, checked the quality of the images (all under 2.5"), combined using the average method with Avg. Sigma Clipping, saved, and then created using the Color Combine tool. Saved the resulting image and used Dynamic Crop to clean up the overlapping boarders, images are dithered, saving the result. I've used DBE on the resulting image and saved. At that point I'm doing a color calibration on the image using both the star method as well as the galaxy for the white reference as detailed in Harry's video tutorial. The images are still linear. Neither result is good, each having a strong green rendering. This seems strange because if I use the STF tool without the channels linked I get a reasonable rending of the image while the rendering with the linked channels is the same as what the color calibration process is giving me. The image is very large but I have cropped the center with the galaxy and some background area as well as the full image zipped and posted on my website. The copped image is 21 MB while the full image is 87 MB. Anyone with good bandwidth care to show me where I'm failing? I usually have very good results with this but for whatever reason I'm failing miserably on this image. I can take the image into PS and get a well balanced image but the point is to avoid PS altogether. The posted zipped files should be downloadable at http://www.astral-imaging.com/M82-10A-rgb1_dbe_centercrop.zip and the full is http://www.astral-imaging.com/M82-10A-rgb1_dbe.zip

It will take a while for these to upload via my satellite connection so I'd expect them to be available in a couple of hours. Satellite isn't great but it beats dial-up, my only other choice. :-\

Due to issues with uploading such large files via satellite, I've given that attempt up. What I did do is use just 10 each of the red, green, and blue images which with the Baader filters I use, should have been close to a 1:1:1 rgb ratio. Even that attempt showed a strong green effect. But I did save the resulting rgb image and took that image into my observatory computer which has PI installed but does not have the last 5 updates. Color calibration worked as expected on that system. I'm not saying that the last 5 updates broke this color calibraion but that's the only difference I'm aware of.

As I said earlier, I've given up on trying to upload the fits files due to their size.

Any suggestions?

Lex,

I went back and resumed the full upload (87 MBs) and that finished so that link should work. The cropped image is being uploaded now (21 MBs) and should be available soon.
