Tif and jpg file support
« on: 2012 February 23 05:51:57 »
I installed my trial version of pixinsight today.
I tried to open a .tif file
This is not in the list of supported file types (File -> Open) which shows types such as .bmp, .cr2, .xbm, .xpm and others
How can I open .tif or .jpg files in pixinsight

Hi,

*.tif files are listed so they should open fine. I think you're not using the right open option. Choose file->open or double click on the workspace. If that's still not working simply drag-n-drop an image onto the workspace. That's how I generally open my files.

I did notice that the file-open dialog does not have the standard 'any file *.*' option. It probably should.
Best,

I was using file-> open and it did not work.
I tried drag and drop and get message

*** Error: No installed file format can read ".tif" files
No files were loaded

I converted to .png in another program and since this was a supported format, it opened.

I open .tif files all the time so something odd is going on. Can you upload an example .tif that does not want to open? What OS do you use? Can the file in question be opened by other software?

Attach that or a smaller .tif file that refuses to load, please. If it loads fine here then something went wrong during the install. Can you copy/paste the startup text in the console? That's the same window you posted a screenshot of just now. Right click to select all / copy and paste here.

tif files are big. There is a limit on attachment file size in forum.

After uninstalling and reinstalling pixinsight with the available updates, I am able to open .tif files.
Thanks all for your help.

That's why I said "or a smaller .tif file". If you could have simply cropped your tif it would have uploaded fine.

Hello,

as other guys said, PixInsight opens TIFs or JPEGs without problems, assuming there are appropriate format modules installed. As they are part of default PixInsight installation, I believe there's something wrong with your installation (as error *** Error: No installed file format can read ".tif" files suggests). Look at the Format Explorer window (there's tab with magenta ball icon on the left side of the screen) - it should list all installed formats. If TIFF and JPEG is not among them, you can try to reset PixInsight settings (this option should be available in the Start menu under PixInsight folder).

hope it helps, Zbynek

I also have a TIFF problem with PI, albeit different to that being discussed here.

If I open an unprocessed TIFF in PI, it opens with no problem. However, if I part process the image in Photoshop, and resave it as a TIFF, to bring it into PI to further process, it is displayed in an unusable form, as per attached 'screen shot'  ???

Hi Dave

Check if the image has alpha channels. If you are writing a Tiff file in PS, make sure that you have flattened all layers, and there is no transparency.
That seems to be the problem.

Hi Carlos

The image is definitely 'flat', with no layers remaining.

There were layers created, as a duplicate layer, plus a 'layer mask' was used for applying selective High Pass Filtering to the 'dust lanes' in the galaxy. However, the image was 'flattened' before being resaved as a TIFF.

Before processing in P/Shop, the image opens fine as TIFF in PI.

I guess there is something odd happening with P/Shop, and not PI, as I have just tried opening the same TIFF in AA5, and I get a similar result to PI.

Maybe P/Shop isn't fully flattening the image, for some obscure reason, but at least I can now dismiss it as a PI problem

Dave

UPDATE

I have just opened this TIF in P/Shop, and resaved it as a PNG. The PNG version opens fine in both PI and AA5  ???

Is the image displayed in PS in the "background" layer, or something else? It looks like something weird is happening with the transparency.
Also, you may check the first alpha channel in PI. Extract and delete all alpha channels in the image with the "ExtractAlphaChannels" process (under Image). If the image isn't shown correctly right now, then the problem is somewhere else.
Could you upload a small crop of a tiff file that shows that problem?
