AutoHisto

Hey guys,
Love the new AH but almost no documentaton? Seems to do a DDP like compression and balance color- the preservation of core star color is amazing- any more info appreciated. Thanks!
Best always, Warren

Hi Warren,

Do you mean AutoHistogram? This tool is actually rather old; Carlos Milovic wrote it back in 2006, if I remember well.

AutoHistogram computes and applies the required gamma transform to force the specified target background value in the image. The default value of 0.1 is quite appropriate for most deep-sky images. The effect is similar to the AutoStretch function of ScreenTransferFunction. Note that this is different from the standard HistogramTransformation tool, which does not use a gamma transform, but a rational interpolation function.

DDP is still available in PixInsight, but it has been marked as obsolete long time ago (it's under the Obsolete category on Process Explorer). It probably won't be part of the default tool set in PixInsight 2.0.

Yes Juan sorry,
I'm the king of abusing abbreviations and acronyms! :) I agree DDP isn't needed due to  PI's wonderful nonlinear stretches. As I said, using AutoHistogram seemed to leave star core color richer than I've never seen before!

On another note if I may, I'm seeing odd little flashes during processes- like the screen goes white for a millisecond. Not sure if this interaction between PI and my video card/processor, or something slightly unstable within the latest v of PI itself. Curious if anyone else has this. Thank you gang.

Since asked, I'll put AutoHistogram on top of the documentation queue ;)

Hi

I have on occasions , when I am running a processor intensive tool I have seen the entire PI screen disappear altogether for a second or so  :P

Nothing crashes , just seems PI takes all my I7 power  >:D

Regards Harry

Hi Harry, Thanks, me too- but these are different, rather they're rapid flashes between white/normal. It may not be PI and it's frustrating because all is normal except for one other program I know of- the now unsupported MS FrontPage which dates back to the XP era and I run W7.  My drivers are up to date, new vid card and monitor. It's just odd. I love computers. ;>)
