Mac 64 bit new bugs?
« on: 2011 November 04 01:43:14 »
Since applying the latest updates, I'm having the occasional problem with the 64 bit version on my MacBook Pro OS 10.6.8

Sometimes I'm unable to drag a new instance to an image, I have to click the apply button instead. Also occasionally, I get a quarted black and white circle in place of the cursor. I'm unable to do anything so I have to force quit PixInsight and start over again. I'm  now using the 32 bit version instead.

Regards
Dave

Hi Dave,

Unfortunately I can't reproduce any of these weird problems on my Mac machine with 10.6.8. The 64-bit Mac OS X version still has some minor cursor and screen drawing issues, but nothing similar to what you are describing. If I can't reproduce the problem then I can't understand, find and fix it.

We are about to release a new version of PixInsight. The reason why we are not releasing the new version yet is that we are waiting for the new Qt 4.8 release. Hopefully Qt 4.8 will fix most issues in the Mac OS X / Cocoa version of PixInsight. In addition, I have ordered a new Mac where we'll test and debug the Core application on OS X 10.7. The damned crash at exit is killing our reputation of stability on the Mac... patience...

Juan,

Thank you for your reply, I have the patience. I'm still enamoured by the total PixInsight experience.  8)

juan, if you do a project from start to finish on 64-bit PI i guarantee you you will hit some bug or other.

last night i made a preview, dragged it to a new window, did DynamicPSF and then started experimenting with deconvolution. after about 15 applications/undos of deconvolution, PI hung up on me. i had to do the gdb thing. if you want me to start sending you stack traces when i do this, i can.

i'm serious when i say the only thing that makes 64-bit PI usable on OSX is the project functionality. when it gets into a bad state i save the project, restart PI and reload the project. otherwise there's no way i could use it because it would be just too painful to save all of my masks and intermediate images.

Juan,

I agree with Pfile, I encounter hangers everytime that i use the 64 bit version other than this the 32 one just works seemlessly...
Clear Skies!!
