Mac OS X 64 bit updater no-install loop

Pixinsight V1.07.00.0697 Starbuck (x86_64)

On startup, Pixinsight tells me I have ten updates available. I enable the updates, close the application, and then I see a dialog that asks if I want to install updates (the restart application box is checked). I click yes, and nothing happens.

When I restart the program, this loop repeats. Why won't the updates install on exit? I am the sole user on this machine and have admin privileges.

I haven't seen anything similar to this before. As far as I can tell, the update system works perfectly on Mac OS X.

Anybody can confirm this problem? Anybody can figure out the cause of this?

Rebooted the system and the same loop repeats:

On starting Pixinsight I have a dialog that announces updates, click the box and they download:

Packages downloaded:
  10 successful
   0 failed
Downloaded packages are now scheduled for installation.
The updates will be installed when you exit this instance of the PixInsight Core application.
Should you need to cancel the scheduled update, you can do so by selecting Resources > Update > Unschedule Update Installation.

I click APPLY and exit PixInsight (Dialog box):

Update packages have been scheduled for installation. Do you want to install the updates now?  (restart Pixinsight box is checked)

I click yes ... nothing happens. PI does not restart automatically, the updates are not applied. Should I reinstall PI? Is there a library or pref file that needs deletion?

Can I get a link to re-download the latest version of PI and skip this FUBAR update process?

is PI crashing before the installer starts? i have seen that often times the x86-64 version crashes on exit. if there was an update pending at that time it does not happen. when PI starts up again it wants to download the updates again, but i suspect they are still hanging around in whatever temp directory they were put in.

can the installer be invoked by the user somehow? is it inside the PI application bundle somewhere? if so "open -a /path/to/updater.app" might work after a PI crash on exit.

I have seen this behavior a few times but it occurs once or twice in a row. Not in a loop. Nothing scientific here but everytime it happens is when

1-I launch PI
2- update are available and  downloaded
3- I immediately  quit PI and the update are installed
4- PI crash

If between 2 and 3 I do some stuff in PI , like opening a few files then the update goes fine

Martin, thanks for the info. It may be important to understand the problem (a precondition to fix it) and perhaps it is a workaround while I publish a bugfix update. Can more Mac OS X users confirm that this prevents the crash on exit?

Tonight there was an update (noise reduction) and it happened exactly as I describe above

Again thanks and sorry for the trouble.

It is *essential* that more Mac OS X users report if Martin's workaround (open an image before terminating the application right before installing an update) work also for them. This is a weird error and to make it worse we cannot reproduce it, so any information is greatly appreciated.

perhaps you need to have a printer installed and set to default for this bug to happen. i definitely do - an hp officejet connected via ethernet.

edit: additionally, quitting gdb from here allowed the update to happen. so i guess i can't reproduce this again unless you tell me how to trick PI into thinking it needs to install an update.

Looks like the problem is in a call to QPrinter::paperSize() from PixInsightPrinter, although the call to QDesktopWidget::resizeEvent() is strange. Your second report:

seems to confirm that the problem is in printer code, so I'll follow this path. I have also network printers and the problem doesn't happen, so it must be something more 'basic'; perhaps a Qt bug. This is a nasty bug that is damaging PixInsight's reputation on Mac OS X so I have to fix it urgently. If only I could reproduce it...

It occurs only on quit so I would not call it nasty. It's not like a crash in the middle of an intense process when you loose everything.

I would call PixInsight bad habit of jumping in front of other windows a "nasty bug". Like when you do something like Batch Debayer on 200 files and would like to do something else in the meantime (listening to a video tutorial for example). I dont know if it's Mac specific but even if I hide PixInsight it still shows up.

But having something as powerful as PI running on the Mac make me forget about every glitches.

i think i reported this "foregrounding" behavior as well but juan could not reproduce it. it seems to have gotten less bad, but it is still there. it only seems to happen when running scripts, and if i start the script and move to another workspace or put another app in the foreground, then PI stays put until i happen to click on PI again. after that every time the script iterates, PI comes to the foreground.
