Help needed: How to say "CIE Lab" in English ?
« on: 2011 July 04 03:51:41 »
Spelling it as C.I.E. or saying it as a word (CIE). We need this for a tutorial and I'd appreciate a fast answer.

I'd say CIE is a word. On the other hand, spelling C.I.E. many times during a tutorial sounds really awkward. And if it is a word, how to say it? Somebody knows the correct way? Thanks a lot!

Why don't you just omit CIE the next times you are refering to the Lab color space?

That isn't an answer to my question, is it? :)

Answering to your question, we don't want to omit CIE because we want to be formally correct. You may disagree but it is our choice of style.

It took a few minutes to find, but C.I.E. is apparently "Commission Internationale de l'Eclairage", according to:

www.sapdesignguild.org/resources/glossary_color/index1.html

Personally, I think most English speakers would stick to Lab Color Space, but otherwise would just say the abbreviation,"C" "I" "E" as a prefix.

Thank you for your answers. So it seems that spelling C.I.E. is the best way.

Yes, CIE stands for Commission Internationale de l'Eclairage. Sorry, I should have mentioned that.

One more question: "Lab" is said as a word, not spelled, am I correct? This contrasts with "CIE Lch space" and "CIE XYZ space", where Lch and XYZ must obviously be spelled.

Sorry for the rather stupid questions, but for non-native English speakers like us these things are not obvious.

Personally I prefer "CIE" as you don't write N.A.S.A. and Lab instead of Laboratory or "Lab.".

Hi

I think NASA works as its a well known acronym , also we don't say CIA we say C.I.A

I will change my tack on the word cie not sounding English as to pronounce it could be

1) Sea ( wavy stuff)
2) see ( to look)
3) C ( the letter)

and of course the Spanish SI ( yes)   8)

So personaly I would stick with C.I.E.

Ooh, I am sorry, I didn't realize that we were talking about a video tutorial. In this case I totally agree with C.I.E. spelling >:D. And it's true that NASA acronym sounds well in english wich is not the case of CIA or CIE.

As it's an acronym context is important. If it is being used in a technical presentation it should first be spoken or written CIE. 'C Lab' would be fine after that - image processing jargon. First refer to CIE Lab then C Lab or just CIE and leave out Lab or just say Lab. Contractions are fine in this case because we all know to what it refers. Hope that helps ??? ::)

astropixel: There are other CIE *** color spaces. For example, CIE XYZ and CIE Lch.
Since there is no way to misinterpret "Lab" for something else (or other color space), I would just use the full name once, and then contract...
