Possible memory leak in StarAlignment?
« on: 2011 July 03 19:41:06 »
Hey,

This is probably an extreme case, but...

I have 796 images to align. I happened to be running on the 32-bit windows version (as that was what I was booted into). Round about image 585 I started getting "Out of Memory" messages and failures to align any subsequent image. All images are 32-bit floats.

Now my obvious response to this is after my capture run and reduction tonight is to boot back to MacOS and run the balance of the images using the 64-bit version.

Still, since the images appear to be aligned serially, it seems odd to me that I'd run out of memory (even on the 32-bit version) unless something isn't being released after each image is aligned.

Thoughts?

Thanks,

Hi Erik,

AFAIK, there's no memory leak in the StarAlignment process. The problem you've seen is most likely due to memory fragmentation under 32-bit Windows. Although I've been careful to avoid these problems, 32-bit versions of Windows are known for their less-than-perfect memory management, to say it politely.

Anyway I'm going to carry out some tests to see if I've overlooked something. Thanks for reporting.
