image window puzzle
« on: 2011 April 10 03:18:33 »
Hi there! When I open multiple images in PI and grap the one on top it automaticcally moves to the back of the stack while i hold it. Any image I try to grab does the same. It is like trying to grab a piece of wet soap. Why is this?

Using version 01.06.09.0652 64bit under OSX.

Also, when I have worked on a project for some time I start getting white rectangles on the screen, like empty dialog boxes. These do not disappear until I quit and restart.

In addition I'm getting Segmentation Violation errors that I have not pinned down to any particular action yet, - I hope I will though 'cause it is causing me to lose many hours of work.

I've had this window stacking issue, too, under both the 32 and 64 bit versions on OSX.

I don't know what the deal with it is, but oftentimes I'll run a module and the problem will be fixed after I run it. Not a good long-term solution, though.

Hola Ginge,

En mi caso cuando selecciono una imagen se mueve debajo de la imagen previa, no al fondo. Esto se puede deshabilitar en "Preferences" "Translucent work space child windows"

Hi Ginge,

In my case when grab the one on top it moves to the back of the previous images of the stack while I hold it. This can be uncheked in  "Preferences" "Translucent work space child windows"

Saludos. Alejandro.

Thanks for the replies guys!
@ Alejandro: I had "translucent work space child windows" checked. I unchecked it and it still behaves like this. BTW my first post was inaccurate: the image I grab moves to the back of the previous image, just like you mention. It is however, as jlake also mentioned, not a permanent state. If I flip through all the images once, the behaviour is back to normal...

How about Segmentation violation hangs and empty dialog-boxes...? Do you get any of these?

Best regards,
Ginge

Hi Ginge,

As you know the 64-bit Mac OS X version is experimental due to some GUI problems it still has. However, I can't reproduce this behavior on Mac OS X, neither on the 32-bit nor on the 64-bit version. I've just made a test with 12 images open on the 64-bit version, playing with them, several processes, scripts, real-time previews, etc., and I've seen no issues besides the known cursor problems.

To fix a bug, I need to find and understand it first. I need some pattern or sequence of operations that I can repeat to reproduce the same issue you're having. Sorry for not being able to say something more constructive.

None at all; this should never happen with the standard set of modules. It may happen however if you have some beta development modules installed. What modules are you using?

Only standard modules AFAIK. Maybe I should try installing on my desktop to see if I can narrow the problems down to my laptop (which is MacBook 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 4 GB RAM BTW, - rather old as you see which might or might not have something to do with it...). The window issue is stable and occurs every time I open several images, no exception. The other two issues are more random, if anything they seem to be happening when moving windows around, sometimes the app feels a bit sluggish and moving an icon can actually cause it to get stuck to the cursor (hehe, kind of cute) as if it missed you actually releasing the mousebutton. I know this issue has been followed by a crash, - and I am pretty sure it was a Segmentation Violation message. I'll keep checking to see if I can detect a pattern.

Would I be able to install PI on my desktop for testing?

Best regards,
Ginge

i have had this happen on osx 32-bit as well; i think if i drag 10-15 fits files onto the pixinsight desktop (or perhaps just select 10-15 of them in the file open dialog) it will sometimes happen.

Ok, this is the bit I needed to understand the problem. Yes, I can see this behavior too. It only happens when you either launch the PixInsight application by double-clicking on a .fit or .xpsm file, or when you drop files to PI's workspace. This is a Mac OS X specific issue. I know this problem already and will try to fix it.

Workaround: Always open your files from PixInsight, using File > Open or double clicking on PI's workspace.

awesome, glad you could reproduce it!

Dragging files onto applications is one of my preferred ways to open files. For PI and other apps. It generally works OK for me except with UNC paths. Those don't work. A bummer as I use my NAS quite a bit.
