2 questions
« on: 2011 February 06 09:22:14 »
Hi all,
2 questions:
1) Update: "Unable to download repository information"
Detail
http://update.pixinsight.com/: Parsing repository update information: Invalid platform 'version' attribute value: 1.6.9.651:1.6.9.651 (line=129,column=67)

2) BatchDeBayer script: after processing my CR2 files (that, if opened directly with PixInsight OR Nebulosity, are regular FULL COLOR)  the resulting FITS are B/W. Why? Some setting? What have I to do?

Thanks in advance

Federico

Federico, this may not be the correct answer for your problem but remember when you open a CR2 file with BatchDebayer it does a BatchFormatConversion that calls settings from the DSLR_RAW, (RAW format preference settings screen). Go to the VIEW--Explore Windows-- Format Explorer, then double click on  DSLR_RAW to open the RAW preference setting screen.
On this screen you can set  what kind of conversion you want. Remember that when you do a ImageCalibration of a CR2 file a FormatConversion happens that is the result of the
settings of the RAW format preference setting.
I don't have answer on the download ?

Thanks a lot Cleon, It's interesting, but this doesn't answer to my question(s).

1) Following other threads I've downloaded the latest, uninstalled, installed and now all seems ok.

2) From a "Debayer" script I expect to get debayering from a bayered RAW image, tipically, a CR2/Canon 450d image.
So, the result has to be a RGB FITS that - opened - has to be colored like the original or so; for sure, not a pure gray image. Can anyone explain which is the right bahaviour or setting that I missed?
In the Format Explorer there's nothing about B/W conversion instead of color; only about different debayering methods, very interesting but they don't seem to change anything in the BatcheDebayerScript (that allows Bilinear or SuperPixel only transformations).
I've seen that the "BatchFormatConversion" (seems to) do the job, if I convert from CR2 to 32bit floating. Is this right?

Thanks in advance
Federico

Hi Federico,

I may be wrong, but I think this problem could be solved by downloading and installing latest PixInsight distribution from the website, because newer version is "too new" to be updated by version you have installed. At least I would give it a try. I remember I had to do it at least once AFTER the automatic updates were already part of PixInsight. Till that time, it works fine.

Hi Federico,

Sorry, I overlooked your first message for some reason.

1) Update: "Unable to download repository information"

Zbynek has nailed it. That happens because you're using an old version of PixInsight. You should have version 1.6.9.651 installed. However, this version must be downloaded from Software Distribution and requires full manual installation (and don't forget to uninstall your current version before installing 651).

Indeed. I guess this may be due to an incorrect DSLR RAW settings configuration. So let's start clean:

- Open the Format Explorer window.

- Double click the DSLR_RAW item.

- On the RAW Format Preferences window:
* Color adjustment: all three values = 1.0
* White balance: both options disabled.
* Create RAW Bayer image (RGB image) enabled. Alternatively, you can also select the "Create RAW Bayer CFA image" option. The only difference is that the Bayer RGB images allow for more accurate dark scaling with ImageCalibration.
* No black point correction enabled.

Now you have the correct settings to load true raw images.

Let me know if this makes a difference.

Thanks Juan,
both things run.
A further question: you said - White balance: both options disabled.
Now my photos - done with quite bad atmospheric conditions, polluted skies etc - have a nice chrome yellow tint (after ScreenTransfer-ring) that I had never seen before
I use an Astrodon Modified 450d; camera white balance is then modified; why your advice to not use the white balance?
I'll try to answer: it applies only to terrestrial photos. Is that right? But once you apply it to darks, lights and flats, which is the difference?

Thanks
Federico

Federico,

Glad to know it's working ;)

If the camera's built-in white balance consists of a linear transformation (e.g. a straight multiplication of all pixel values by constant factors) and it is applied equally to all the images (including lights, biases, darks and flats), then that's OK, there's no problem. Can you guarantee that?

Otherwise, then the difference is that you won't have raw data anymore.

My advice is: always disable white balance. Disabling it is the safest procedure. Yes, you'll get an ugly color cast, but that's very easy to fix with BackgroundNeutralization and ColorCalibration.
