Call for help: Test new updater for Windows
« on: 2010 December 26 15:58:23 »
Hi all,

I think I have managed to understand/find/fix where the problem is with the updater on Windows. However I have an additional problem: none of my Windows test machines reproduces these issues; the update process always runs flawlessly on my machines. I really don't know why.

Hence I ask for your help. Once we get this problem solved, I'll pack and release a new version of PixInsight for all platforms, including this bug fix and a few others.

I have uploaded new versions of the updater programs for Windows:

32-bit version:
http://pixinsight.com/tmp/PixInsightUpdater-windows-x86.20101226.zip

64-bit version:
http://pixinsight.com/tmp/PixInsightUpdater-windows-x86_64.20101226.zip

These zip files contain new versions of the PixInsightUpdater.exe, updater2.exe and updater3.exe files that you should copy to your bin installation folder (C:\Program Files\PixInsight\bin or C:\PCL\bin) replacing the previous ones.

To test the new updater, please do the following:

- Exit PixInsight, if you have it running.

- Uncompress the zip file and copy its contents to your bin installation folder: C:\Program Files\PixInsight\bin or C:\PCL\bin (or wherever you installed PixInsight). This will replace the PixInsightUpdater.exe, updater2.exe and updater3.exe files with the new versions.

- Delete the file 'updates.xri' that you'll find on your installation folder: C:\Program Files\PixInsight, or C:\PCL, etc.

- Run PixInsight Core. It will tell you that you have two updates (the reference documentation and the NoiseReduction module). Apply both updates and exit PixInsight to install them.

- Tell me what the update log says. Fingers crossed! :)

Thank you in advance.

Juan,

I have tested the new updater files.  They do not work with the initial default of the Run As dialog.  Every time I exit PixInsight to update, windows produces the Run As dialog box.  The user must uncheck "Protect my computer..." before the update will be successful.  I have sent you screen shots and log files to your personal email.

There is one concern with the latest update.  Once the process failed, the icons on the Toolbar are no longer responding.

Wade

Hi Juan,

I've just downloaded and installed the new version (Windows 64 bit).  It immediately told me that I had two updates, so I followed the instructions and the updates were successfully downloaded and installed.  The whole process was as smooth as a baby's bum.  Well done.

Sorry I didn't see this post before I did the updates otherwise I'd have tried the new updater.

I'm sure there is no connection but after installing and updating, I logged on to the forum to look up how to find the documentation and discovered that the scroll speed of my Microsoft Wireless Laser mouse seems to have set itself back to the slowest setting.  Most odd.

Thank you Wade, Mike and Jordi.

Wade, the RunAs pop up window is just normal behavior on Windows XP. UAC (User Acccount Control) is not supported on XP, so the user must either disable the "Protect my computer..." option, or select a user account with administrative privileges and enter the corresponding password.

The other problem of no toolbars is odd; I haven't seen it before.

Now what I need is that the users that had problems on Windows Vista and Windows 7 try out the new updater ASAP. Without their confirmation I am stuck and cannot release a new version, which I should do quickly! HELP!!! O:)

Juan,

I followed your instructions with Windows XP 64 bit and everything worked fine.  One small detail, the Log messages were date stamped 2010-12-27 21:37:..... whereas the actual date was 2010-12-28 08:07:...  It looks like it thought we are on GMT!  Obviously not worth 'fixing'.

Juan,

I tested both the 32- and 64-bit updaters successfully under Win7 x64. My previous problems with timeouts are now resolved. I also observed the timeout problem with W2K3 Server SP2--I'll let you know if the new updater does NOT work.

There may still be another minor update problem that depends on the code path a user activates to perform an update. At first when I failed to click the "you have 2 updates" display in the lower right corner and the display had gone away, I clicked Resources/Check for Updates. When I clicked "apply" in the update dialog list, I got an error dialog that said, "Unable to remove direcotry: C:/Users/.../AppData/Local/Temp...: The directory is not empty." as the updater had previously downloaded the updates to this directory. When I restarted PI and clicked the "you have 2 updates" display, however, I got the save dialog as "Check for Updates", but, in this code path, clicking the "apply" button behaved as expected and did not popup the error dialog.

Hi all

I've installed new updaters and everytihing seems OK on PI (W7 64b).

I have the same strange mouse behaviour than Mike's! I had observed it on old updaters too.

Javier

Hi Iñaki.
It sounds like a firewall is blocking PI... check that. ;)

Hi Juan,

Just to let you know the new updater works fine with my Vista 32.

Great work, as always.

Hi Charles, Roy, Javier, Iñaki, Yuriy, Paul and all of you who helped me test the new updater programs. PI 1.5.9.651 is uploading right now, and I hope the new update system will work well so you won't have to install a whole version in a while.

Roy and Yuriy, the additional problems that you saw (which are actually due to the same cause) have also been fixed in the new version. The updates should go without any errors now (so I hope).

I wish a new year full of clear skies and APODs to all of you 8)

Happy new year,

I did not followed the new developments for the last period. I installed the new version when I got my email, opened it to see that it is running, downloaded the reference system and let it alone. Today I opened it again and I got the message to update. But I can not authenticate with the server, no matter what I tried. I used the same user name / password that gives me access to the commercial download area (confirmed a few moments before to be sure).
I tried this patch also. Still I'm getting an "Invalid user authentication data". Vista 32bit. Any help is welcomed.
