Not a huge problem for me just need to leave it for a few seconds ( 12 I timed it )  and all is ok  ;D

Hmm, but it is a problem, actually. That 12 seconds mean that something very strange is happening when PixInsight Core terminates execution.

On my working machines, PI dies a fraction of a second after selecting File > Exit. That is the normal behavior; the delay you're experiencing denotes something that should never be happening and has the potential to cause lots of problems (as Roy has reported for example). I want to have it under control. I'll investigate more on this topic and will make more tests on different machines.

Ok, I've sorted the problem at my end  :)

I needed to uncheck the 'protect my computer' box, which then allowed the two downloaded update files to install.

My system obviously saw them as a potential threat.

Hi Juan,

I uninstalled/re-installed PIx64, disabled the antivirus (Vipre Enterprise), and re-ran the updater with the same timeout error. SysInternals Process Explorer showed PI shutting down quickly and the updater launching as expected. As an experiment, I launched PI again to find its PID and then updated my batch file with that PID. Running the batch file as an administrator while PI was still running "paused" the update until I manually closed PI. Then the update ran successfully and much faster than the PI-initiated update. It looks like the updater is timing out, but not because PI is terminating slowly. This same behavior also occurs with the 32-bit version of PI.

Let me know if there is anything else you would like me to try here. Are there any Win 7 Group Policy Objects for installations that might make programmatic requests for admin permissions different than local user-initiated requests for admin permissions?

Hi all

I also have PI updater problems.  After inizializing PI, checking updater window and closing PI so that updating process can finish, appears the usual message "Please wait until updates are being installed".  However, that windows stay for several minutes and, next PI starting, updating process is running again, without any update installed.

My platform is W7 64b, and I've tried also Roy's bath unsucessfully.

I'm getting an update error like Federico after PI x64 or x32 restarts on a Win 7 x64 system. The view log below "thinks" the main PI process did not stop. However, if I create a batch file and launch it, "run as administrator", the update process succeeds. Looks like the UAC settings for the updater do not give it permission to access the protected program directories.

For reference of others, here is my batch file for PI x64,

"C:\Users\RoyF\AppData\Local\Temp\PixInsight64-update\updater1\PixInsightUpdater.exe" 8676 "C:\Program Files\PixInsight" "C:\Users\RoyF\AppData\Local\Temp\PixInsight64-update\contents"

You will need to change the path where the PI updater downloaded the update as well as the target and source directories. You can find these directories for your system by clicking "view log" button on the PI error report when PI restarts. The Program ID (PID) that you pick for the batch file does not matter as long as it is not the PID of an unrelated running process!

Sorry to add further burdens but my (Windows 32 Vista) PI update does not work either. It goes through the download procedure and after shutting down I instigate the update procedure. I too get the please wait.... box but the procedure just hangs there and the update is not installed.

I thought the updater worked for me but it doesn't. One issue that immediately comes to mind is that modules should be 'updatable' without requiring a PI restart. They can be unloaded and loaded while PI is running afterall. Maybe something for later. Meanwhile the off-line updater doesn't work for my Vista x64 system:

Hello,
PI is working just fine in my PC Vista 32, Updater is running quickly I close and restart normally.
PI is still running in the PCL folder in my PC, I've not changed the folder when installed V 1.6.9.

I had the same problem but solved it by deselecting the check box to "protect the computer from viruses" when the user permissions dialog box pops up after exiting PixInsight.  Since we know it is PixInsight that wants the permission, it is safe to un-check this feature.

I hope this helps.  I'm using 32-bit Windows XP so I hope things are similar on other versions Windows.  :)
