How do I 'Hide' the Processing Console?
« on: 2010 September 26 15:43:06 »
Is there a way to prevent the Processing Console launching when the program is opened, and each time a process is actioned?

A personal preference yes, but the 'hour glass' icon would be enough to indicate that processing is being carried out, without the processing console appearing on the screen every time.

Also, I inadvertantly 'clicked' on the expand icon in the processing control window. How do I return it to it's unexpanded form, as none of the Icons in it's 'window' will do this?

Thanks

Dave

Dave,

Have a look at the following thread, specifically Reply #3, from Juan

Yes, if you don't want to read the output, just increase the delay time. Anyway, most of the times it is useful information, so you may wanna check what it says :D
To resize the console just move the border.

To resize the Processing Console, you can place your cursor to its right or bottom boundary. The cursor will change to a dual arrow (either horizontal or vertical depending on the boundary choice). Then click and drag to what size you want. (You can also place the cursor on the lower right corner and it wil change to a diagonal double-arrow and you can resize the full window that way - but that area is small.)

To hide the console, click on any part of the grey background of the PI window.

The console has lots of pertinent info as to what you're doing so while you can close it, it is going to reopen whenever a process writes to it.

My interpretation of the Console 'Delay Period' - sort of confirmed by reading the on-screen pop-up tool-tip, is that the Console will only appear once the delay period has expired, providing the process that activated the Console 'wake-up' feature is still running.

So, a short delay period would mean that 'trivial' processes are over and complete before the delay period expires, and so they do NOT allow the Console to 'activate'.

I have my delay timer set to 750mS - but have no idea what the really means any more - remember, I have the luxury of an auxiliary monitor dedicated to permanently displaying the Console output (£80, plus a cheap second graphics card, or a USB display driver if using a laptop, etc.)

Delay is a bad term here... indeed, it is like a threshold time. If the processing time goes beyond that time, the console appears.

Yep, I'm familiar with that function in 'wisdows' applications, but my processing console is still stuck at the full height on the PI workspace. I can 'drag' it out widthways, and return it to it's normal width. I can also get the frame sizing double arrow to appear the edge of the top border, but is has no effect, and the bottom one doesn't appear at all.

I guess this could be a 'bug' in the software, and probably the only way out, is to delete the program and re-install it.

As I said, this only occurred after I inadvertantly 'clicked' on the 'expand' icon.

Thanks for the 'link' to that earlier 'thread' Niall, at least its nice to know that its not only me that finds it annoying.

I fully agree that the PC shows valuable information, but I really don't need to see it every time a process is activated, to the degree that it becomes an irritation. Which it has already even after such a short time of using PI.

I will do as suggested and adjust the delay time, but it would be nice if there was an option for the user to disable the appearance of the PC window, as a personal preference if desired.

Tried that along with and without 'load current page settings'  and it just defaults back to 750ms  ???

Hi Dave

You have to press "Apply Globally" (or hit F6). Yes this may sound counterintuitive, as most applycations set preferences with modal windows, or always remember the last input you wrote. But, as you may have seen, in PixInsight "Global Perferences" is just like any other process. It has the same window, even with the drag and drop object. This means that you may create a icon with your favourite settings, and save them to a disk file, or even have several setting sets, for different types of project.
Was I'm trying to say, is that it is a bit odd, it does make sense in PI's GUI, once you are familiar with its methods.

this may sound counterintuitive

It does indeed Carlos, but it works   :)

I'm sure that the PI has it's own idea of intuitive practice, but once you know how its likes to function, then it has some sort of logic.

The answer is familiarity, and of course the missing documentation  ;)

BTW, the only way I could correct the 'frozen' expansion of the processing console window, was as I suggested, and to uninstall the program and re-install it.

If you deselect the "Expand" button you are once again able to move the boundaries of the console. If it is anchored on the left top margin (as default), then raise the bottom border.

That was the problem Carlos, I coudn't get hold the bottom corner, as it was 'frozen' hard against the bottom of the workspace/PI desk top.

The re-sizing 'arrow' would not appear, so I couldn't do anything with it.

Anyway,  its sorted now with the re-install, and I'll try to avoid 'clicking' on the expand icon in future

Another suggestion (in case this happens again) that I just tried ;) : First unselect the expand button. Now, resize the whole application's window (the height). The console should never be partially visible, so it will resize itself for the current space. Now, when you return the window to a larger height, the console will not move again back, so now the borders should be selectable.

That's useful Carlos

I'll try to remember that, if I ever land on the expand icon again.  :)
