Need volunteers/images for PSF extraction testing
« on: 2010 August 20 11:21:16 »
Hi all:

I am working on translating my PSF extraction methods to use with astronomical images.  Currently I have only measured PSFs for terrestrial imaging platforms (read DSLR...).

I am looking for volunteers to provide/donate astronomical images to assist in my developing the method for those kinds of optical systems.  I'm looking for unprocessed 16 or 32 bit linear images of star fields which are in no way overexposed.  In other words I'm looking for images which really are mathematically equivalent to a perfect CDD image of real stars + spreading caused by the PSF (optics and atmosphere etc).

Please let me know if you can help.  I am very excited and hope to share the process once perfected with the PixInsight community.   :)

cheers
Colin

Hi,

I would like to give you some examples. But how can I provide them ?
A FITS Image of a Canon DSLR is about 140 Mbyte ....

Where can I store them to give you access ?

Christoph
Kind regards,

Yes I would be happy to provide images. However, my files are 32MB too.
My email does not like this

I could email a few 1/4 frame crops. A way to upload full images is preferable

Thanks guys!!

I'm SO excited !
I'll do some poking, there must be a way to send <200 MB files for free.  I'll get back to you guys soon!

I know that Google Docs provide 1024 MByte of free space. You need a (free) Google Email Account.

OK So I've used a little FREE proggy called Pando you can grab it at Pando.com.

No registration or sign up, it has a small footprint, easy to use, no spyware, and the FREE version can send files up to 1Gb.

In the program window of the FREE version there are some annoying ads but they are not Offensive.

Here is a link to something I uploaded:

http://cache.pando.com/soapservices/Package/package.pando?id=F739F2D19A3A97F7A91B6C1F1BA6E7BF014AD197&key=0B4164F395B35F3C6F2FF656C795CB51C1378ED8B791B669CB3147ED48043681&tt=S2W&embedId=EA77E076C5E708C25BEFAB914890420F

Let me know if you think you would like to send using this.

I think it works well with minimal effort or hassle.

cheers

More free options:

www.dropbox.com
skydrive.live.com

The benefit over Pando is that you upload the file once and then many can download it. Skydrive is nice but has a 50MB limit per file so larger ones need to be stuck in a multi part archive with 7-zip or something similar. I don't think dropbox has this drawback but I haven't used it yet.
Best,

But I will give you a download link for google docs (no registration req. for you).

Hi Colin,

This looks like a very interesting project, just the kind of development works I want to promote and support on the PixInsight platform. Could you elaborate more on your project?

Should you need information or help on PixInsight's development frameworks (PCL, PJSR) I'll be glad to assist you as I can. Please feel free to post your queries to the development forum board.

In line with Harry's initiative, I can also provide a dedicated ftp account on our server for this project. If you think it's necessary, just let me know.

Hey Colin

You may want to take a look at the StarStatistics class (see the PCL development sub forum). Right now is working quite well to extract the gaussian profile of a star.
