Combining Different Image Scales
« on: 2010 August 06 11:01:43 »
Hello,

I'm sure this has been discussed before, but I am having difficulty locating a conversation I once read concerning this issue.

If I have a friend who will take 2x2 RGB images at a different image scale than my L images, what is the best way to "match" the images for LRGB combination?  Can the Image Registration Module do this?

RGB taken at 2x2 with QHY9 and 480mm FL Refractor
L taken at 1x1 with QHY9 and 780mm FL Refractor

Thanks for any advice.

Regards,
Ken

Hi Ken,

Yes, StarAlignment can, within certain limits, register images with differing scales. Just try it. If you know that your images have different scales, disabling the Use scale differences option (Star Matching section) can save you a lot of time.

In cases where StarAlignment is unable to register the images (either because they are affected by strong varying distortions, or because the scale differences lead to very different sets of stars), the DynamicAlignment tool is your best option, as Harry has pointed out.

Hi Juan,

can you summarize the differences between the two tools and tell us why we need two different ones at all?
Best,
