PixInsight 1.6.1 Now Available
« on: 2010 July 28 12:19:30 »
[Versión en Español al final]

Hi everyone,

I am pleased to announce that the new and so long-awaited version 1.6.1 of PixInsight is now available for download from our file servers. Licensed users (both trial and commercial licenses) will find it on the Software Distribution system, as usual.

I am writing this before sending the standard notification email to all users, and even before writing the required informational/descriptive post on the Release Information forum board. I'll perform both tasks during the incoming hours. I just wanted to let you know that the new version can be downloaded without delaying it more.

Unfortunately, this is not the version that I wanted to release. A number of personal problems, technical difficulties and an extreme workload have made finishing this release much harder than usual, so version 1.6.1 is actually a transitional/bugfix version. The upcoming main improvements to the platform, such as a new XML-based, open-source image format (as the foundation of a project feature), integrated documentation and automatic updates system, will have to wait until the new versions that will be released during Fall-Winter this year.

However, this does not mean that there are no new features, improvements and important changes in version 1.6.1: there are many, and very important, even if some of them are (still) not visible on the surface.

As noted above I'll describe all the new features on a separate post. This is just a brief list of the most important highlights:

- The most stable version of PixInsight ever. I have made huge efforts to achieve the maximum stability in the Core PixInsight application and all standard modules on all supported platforms. Maximizing stability has been the main goal of this version.

- First 64-bit version for Mac OS X. PixInsight is now available as a Cocoa-based, 64-bit (x86_64) application on Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard) and later. Although this version is still experimental and subject to extensive development, it is fully functional and production stable, and can be used without problems to perform any of the image processing tasks and tools available in PixInsight. There are some issues with the graphical user interface, however, such as wrongly updated and disappearing cursors, erroneous screen updates, and some screen artifacts and flickering problems that prevent us from tagging the current 64-bit Mac OS X version as a "Tier One" release.

- New module installation infrastructure. Backwards compatibility is now ensured for all modules compiled and linked against PCL version 1.0.85 and later. Existing modules require a full rebuild, though, but this is definitely the last time that happens.

- Improved multithreading performance across the whole PixInsight/PCL platform. Redesigned pcl::Mutex class to implement programmable spinning mutexes with virtually zero impact on thread performance under heavy contention.

- Redesigned Process Explorer with seamless integration of featured scripts.

- Improved ImageCalibration tool with selectable additive pedestals (working cooperatively with ImageIntegration) and better automatic dark frame scaling routine.

- New Linear Fit pixel rejection algorithm available on the ImageIntegration tool.

- Improved multiscale noise evaluation in ImageIntegration. The new MRS algorithm implementation is now more accurate and much more robust.

- Improved frame adaptation routine for absolutely seamless mosaic construction with StarAlignment.

- Full set of pixel interpolation algorithms available on StarAlignment, including an automatic mode that selects the optimum interpolation as a function of scale changes.

- New gnomonic projection available on StarGenerator. The new projection improves star matching up to a 30% for generation of mosaics over synthetic star fields.

- Updated set of standard scripts, including the latest revised versions published on PixInsight Forum.

- Hundreds of bug fixes on all platforms.

... and more. Thank you all for your support and your patience. I hope the long wait will be worth it. Enjoy!

==========================================================================

A disfrutar!

Thanks Juan! Is this identical to the EA you sent last week or should we re-install?

Hi Sander,

You must uninstall the version that you have and install this new one. There are important changes and last-minute bug fixes. The same for the rest of people that have tried the Windows prerelease version.

So even on this update from a pre-release of 1.6.1 to the GA version I get this: "** PixInsight performed an automatic reset of core application settings due to a version update - some user preferences may require a manual reconfiguration."

When will that ever stop? PI is the only application I know that can't update itself without resetting preferences. I mean that has to be several orders of magnitude easier to do than some of the modules that come in PI.
Best,

No, there are actually no changes in your preferences. There are only internal changes that won't affect your personal preferences at the user level --you can verify that this is true. That message is just a routinary "disclaimer" that I probably should remove or modify in future versions. Thanks for pointing out.

Believe it or not, I've made big efforts to prevent changes to the user preferences system. You shouldn't experience differences with respect to your previous installations... Hmm, to be precise, there is exactly only one automatic change in preferences: there are no 'alert' notifications on the taskbar by default. The state of the 'Alert on process completion' setting is being reset by version 1.6.1 the first time it runs. The reason is that these alerts were generating problems, especially on Mac OS X and some Linux desktops, also on Windows. For this reason I decided to reset it because it isn't anything essential and I think the user's experience actually improves without this feature, in general. If you really want alerts, you can re-enable them in Preferences. Other than this, there are absolutely no changes. Promised!  O:)

Just to be clear, do we need to uninstall 1.6.0 before installing 1.6.1?

I can see great improvement in speed vs 1.6. With 1.5 I had no problems, but 1.6 made my laptop's life a bit hard.
Also (from what I have seen so far) I liked DefectMap in ImageCalibration, I was missing this from nebulosity.

Thank you Juan

Addition:
I thought that ImageIntegration (at least for master dark in order to be able to scale it) should preserve fits headers, but the resulting image has no headers at all ?  ???
