Hi, I've just started using PixInsight (v1.06.00.0592) but am very happy with it and plan to use it as my primary processing.
Here's a link to my very first image processed with PI when my usual PS CS2 techniques just weren't working:

http://www.astrophotogallery.org/member-galleries/p5450-leo-trio.html

That made me a believer but, among the questions I could ask, the following is top of the list:

I tried to run several scripts, in particular interest DarkStructureEnhance, that would not run to completion because the Processing Console is asking for some undocumented input.  Can someone suggest how to get those to run?

Thanks,
-Jeff

Hi Jeff,

nice image and welcome to the PixInsight forums!

I don't know why the script behaved the way it did but it's not meant to be used for galaxy images like the one you showed. Can you provide more information on the problem you encountered? A screenshot that shows the script dialog and the console output would be a minimum we need to see.
Best,

Thanks, Sander-
How embarrassing.  It was merely cockpit error as I discovered DarkStructureEnhance had, in fact, run correctly.  The blinking cursor in the command line distracted me from seeing that it had, in fact, ran successfully to make a subtle improvement on the dark areas of a nebula image (Rosette).  I hesitate to ask any more questions until I'm sure they're not also bogus.

Jeff,

There is no such thing as a 'bogus' question. Just one that may well have been asked before - but NOT by YOU. Sure, the Forum has a LOT of very useful information in it - but we cannot expect every new user to PI to read and assimilate the ENTIRE message base before asking their first question.

So, please, ask away.

It can often be that a question that has been asked before, but is now presented in a different way, can lead to a new answer that everyone benefits from.

And, even if you answer your own question - that very experience helps others as well.

So, welcome to the crazy world of PixInsight.

Cheers,

Hi Jeff,
Glad to see you here! (Jeff and I often meet at dark sites around the area).

... ran successfully to make a subtle improvement on the dark areas of a nebula image (Rosette)

So you felt that the script didn't do much, correct? Do remember you can adjust the "amount" parameter as well as the number of iterations.

If you want an even more controlled application of this script, this is how I'd suggest using it:

1- Check "Extract mask"
2- Run the script
3- Un-do whatever the script did to the image
4- Apply the mask as a mask
5- Adjust the histogram/curves of the mask (the bright areas in the mask are the ones defining the dark areas in the image)
6- Adjust image histogram to perform the "darkening"...

One of the good things of doing it like this is that by using real-time previews, on step 6 you can get instant feedback of how much "darkening" you're applying, rather than running the script and wait to see whether you like the results or not. The other benefit I see is that on step 5 you can better control the areas that later will be darkened. What I would usually do at that step is to relax the areas that look brighter in the mask, that is, reduce a bit their brightness in the mask (to avoid darkening too much the areas that are already dark in the image) and maybe increase a bit the brightness in the other areas. This usually results in darkening the areas you really wanted a bit darker, not the ones that were already dark.

Thanks, Niall.  Good to "see" you from my former LX90 group.

Rogelio-
Very neat. DSE that way does give a lot more control and I think I was able to get the more 3D effect that I was seeking (and stayed in PI):
