FITS keywords are lost on extraction
« on: 2010 May 22 06:08:05 »
Hi,

when I have a FITS file that contains keywords (e.g. information about the image coordinate system), this information gets lost on operations that generate new images, for example RGB image extraction. (ConvertToGrayscale preserves keywords, but of course it works in the existing image.) I also see no simple way to copy this information from one image to another.

Hi Georg,

I thought that I had 'found a solution', but now I am not so sure.

Select the image that you want to 'copy the FITS header information from'. Use the View FITS Header process icon to view the data. Save a copy of this process instance on the workspace. Pick a new image. 'Apply' the saved process icon 'to' the new image. Job done.

Well, 'somehow' I managed to get it to work, just once (I think), but I haven't been able to duplicate things.

Someone like Juan - with access to the code itself - needs to tell us if my suggestion 'could have worked', and then we have to decide, if not, whether this would be a useable 'user interface'.

Cheers,

Niall,
this indeed works, even for multiple images. Thanks for giving me this idea!

Still, I think it is a reasonable assumption that generated images inherit their headers from their parent image by default (at least for operations that dont change geometry....)

Glad it worked Georg,

I have certainly found that, with the v1.6.x release, my PI environment is FAR less stable, requiring me to shut-down PI and restart FAR, FAR more often that before (I used to run for MONTHS and MONTHS between restarts with v1.5.x). So, I think I was seeing that 'one success', just at the point where I needed to restart PI again - which I had to do whilst trying to 'eliminate' a far more serious bug that I am working with at the moment (sorry Juan, I think this IS a 'nasty one', be it a 'bug' or an 'implementation' issue :'() - more of which when I have more details.
