Zoom centering
« on: 2010 May 16 07:04:23 »
Just a little suggestion...

It would be very nice if zooming with the mouse wheel would direct the center of the zoom towards the location of the pointer.  This way you could center your pointer on a star or object of interest and zoom in directly to it with the scroll wheel without having to go back and forth to the sliders.  There is another well known astro photo processing application that works this way.

Hi Mike,

Just in case you were not aware - you can 'Pan' the image by 'pressing' the ScrollWheel and moving the mouse. So, in the meantime, you can very quickly 'grab' the location of interest and 'scroll-wheel-drag' it to the centre of the image view, then release the scrollwheel and continue zooming.

It is perhaps not as elegant as the method you were suggesting (and I do agree with both you and Sander on this anyway), but I have been 'managing' with scroll-wheel 'pans' in the meantime.

Cheers,

Hi Mike, Sander and Niall,

OK, that's very easy to implement. I'll try to include this feature in version 1.6.1. However, it will be selectable via Preferences, as some users (including myself) prefer the current mouse wheel behavior.

Along with panning with the central mouse button pressed as Niall has pointed out, there are some useful temporary mode change keys in PixInsight. This is the complete set:

To temporarily change to this modePress these keys (X11/Windows)Press these keys (Mac OS X)
PanSpaceBarSpaceBar
Zoom InCtrl+SpaceBarAlt+SpaceBar
Zoom OutShift+Ctrl+SpaceBarShift+Alt+SpaceBar

Note that the same temporary change keys work on scrollable graphics in standard process interfaces (CurvesTransformation, HistogramTransformation and ColorSaturation).

Thanks Juan,

Although I 'knew about' the Spacebar shortcuts, I had never used them. However, having just tried the <Ctrl-Spacebar> shortcut, I can immediately see how that will be useful for me to 'zoom to a rectangle'.

Wow!  That never happens with other astro software.  :)

Thanks,

And, despite Juan's relativistic sense of time, updates are released very often. ;)
