Workspace saving
« on: 2010 April 28 10:57:29 »
Hi, I am evaluating PI and have watched all of Harry's videos (thanks harry) and am starting to get a feel for the program.

In Photoshop I am able to save various workspaces with tools that I like to use for particular applications....such as the layers palette, actions palette...etc.

Is this possible in PI....I know you can save the process icons, but they apparently need to be reloaded each time.

I'd like to be able to open PI and have the processes that I use the most as shaded icons on the right hand side....or where ever I want them to be on my desktop.

Is this possible?

best regards,

bud guinn

PS...I did a quick search for this and didn't find the answer.....

Hi Bud

This will be possible with project management Juan is planning to incorporate. No scheduled time yet, but surely it will be before the 2.0 release :D

Hi Bud,

Welcome to PixInsight Forum.

As Carlos has pointed out, this functionality will be part of the new project feature. A PixInsight project will allow you to save the state of the whole PixInsight platform, including all workspaces, tools and images with all their history states (as an option). Loading a project will restart PixInsight in the exact state you left it when the project was saved.

My intention is to implement projects during the 1.6 cycle.

Note that right now the positions of all tools are remembered by PixInsight across sessions.

Steve, you and Harry and Sander are the main reasons I'm looking at PI...and so far I'm liking what I see.....now to try some debayer stuff.

Hi guys, I think I have this "workplace" thing figured out.

I took all of the processes that I like to use.....then
"Saved Process Icons"....and saved this file
I then went to that file and set the "open with" to the PixInsight Core icon.
Now when I double click the saved process Icon it opens PixInsight with my saved process icons.

With a shortcut to this on the desktop I can now start it with no difficulty to my preferred workspace.
I should be able to do this with a few different workspaces......

best regards,

bud

PS...I went and found the Icon for PI and changed it so it even looks official.

Hi Harry,

I'm so used to working certain ways and I always try to keep things consistent.

here is a screen shot of how it opens:

I'm working through the tutorials and videos and pretty happy so far...

thanks for the help,

Great tip Bud. Keep the pointers coming. Can't wait to see what you'll come up with after you've been using PI for a week or two. ;D

PI Projects (lack thereof) has been one of my pet peeves. I really don't like that I have to keep PI running during a processing session if I want to make optimal use of all its powerful features. I want to save my current *everything* and restore it later.

Anyway, Juan and I have talked about this for a long time. I hope it's finally coming. IMO it would be a huge productivity win.

Best,

In the meantime Bud,

You can be confident that you CAN keep a single instance of PixInsight running for a LONG time. I have had a single session running without any difficulties for SEVERAL months in the past, so it does seem to be 'reliable' O:)

thanks for the input, guys......my workaround is working pretty well.
It would be nice to save the entire session,  however.
