Something goes wrong with DynamicBackgroundExtraction in PI 1.6...
When you try to change location of sample by dragging it, reaction on mouse movement is soooooooo sloooooowwwwwww, especially when you want to drag the sample on relative long distance.
This is something new, reaction on user's action in 1.5 was almost instant.

Can anybody confirm this?

Now this is really really weird. Please perform a full reset: Start > All Programs > PixInsight Platform > Reset PixInsight Settings, or launch PixInsight with the Ctrl key pressed.

Hi Yuriy and Nikolay,

This problem concerns me because it might be showing some weaknesses in the new multithreading scheme implemented in version 1.6.

If you disable parallel processing, does this problem still happen? Furthermore, if you enable parallel processing again, but allow PixInsight to use all processor cores minus one, does this solve the problem?

Hi Juan,
Control'ed (with Ctrl pressed down) restart totally reasolve the issue, no problem during interaction with samples anymore.
So - no issue with "clean" install (but instead I've lost STF somewhere behind the screen and it appeared back only after the secong Ctrl restart.... )

Will see what Nikolay will observe.

I have just tried this on my Vista x64 install and I didn't see the slowdown. That said I have noticed it quite a few times in the past where placing the first sample took quite a few seconds. Subsequent samples were much quicker. Supposedly this is because DBE calculates certain stats when the first sample is placed. Not sure why this would sometimes lead to a slow down while it's fast other times.
Best,

Oh wait, I didn't read the description properly. Dragging a sample isn't smooth for me either. It depends on the dragging speed but it gets 'sticky' and makes large jumps if I move the mouse quickly. This is on my i7-920 system. I don't typically move samples like that so it's no big deal for me.

Hi,

I really don't want to reset my PI preferences unless I have to. It's bad enough that my favorites and prefs get wiped with every upgrade.

  • We have cookies? Where ?
Hi Sander,

Could you 'copy' your original conf.ini file. do the factory reset, and then copy back the bits that you want to keep?

Bit of a long-way-round, but it might help.

Niall,

I don't make a practice of dragging DBE samples around that fast so it's a non-issue for me :)

Besides I have a hard time believing that settings are to blame here. There's simply a lot of calculations going on and perhaps there are inefficiencies in the complex path the control and data has to follow. I know Juan won't like that last bit a whole lot but having coded a dynamic module in PCL I know how many callbacks etc. there are. It's quite possible that the dragging of a sample simply is an expensive operation that gets serviced by a single thread. No big deal.
