Process windows not appearing (1.6)

Many process windows just don't appear when selected (most of them), regardless of whether I select them from the Process menu or the Process Explorer.

I decided to peek at the Global Preferences to see if it was something I had to reconfigure after installing PI on a different folder (I did uninstall PI 1.5 regardless), but the thing is... even the Global Preferences dialog doesn't show up.

I don't know if this is a bug or something with my configuration but I do need help...

Uninstalled 1.6 from the new location (C:\Program Files\PixInsight), reinstalled 1.5 in old directory (C:\Program Files\PixInsight64), uninstalled 1.5, reinstalled 1.6 in old directory... All well now.

Something went bananas when installing 1.6 in a different directory, apparently...
Not saying I had to reinstall 1.5, but I did it to get a few things done before continuing troubleshooting, and since that's what I did, that's what I'm reporting...

I was about to suggest you a full reset of PixInsight settings (Start > All Programs > PixInsight Platform > Reset PixInsight Settings). I'm happy to know everything's working for you again

I've lost ScreenTransferFunction for the 3rd time during last couple of days, 2-3 hours of playing with PixInsight.
Without STF - well, like without hands...

There is only one workaround that helps in this case - perform Full Reset (i do it starting PI with Ctrl down).
But it will happen again after it, sooner or later...
This is, well, annoying...

Another issue - some process windows (like StarAlignment) will be flashing during their work with Console opened, for ex, StarAligment will go On/Off irregularly, on every 2nd-3rd frame processes in sequense...
Looks like these are links of the same chain.
Could you please make a look on this?

I confirm this is also happening to me. I use two monitors, and each has a different resolution, don't know if it's related.
If I see a pattern I'll report it. For now the only thing I know is that it'll only happen after I close PI and open it again, and only with certain dialogs, sometimes dialogs that I have NOT used in the previous sessions after the reset, sometimes with dialogs that I have used.

So although the "reset windows geometries" option would be nice - so we can "fix" this when it happens without losing other custom settings - it would be worth investigating.

Is this behavior filed as a bug? I now find myself having to reset settings almost every time I start a PI session. Sooner or later I call a process that refuses to show itself. Like I said the other day, a reset window geometries option would be nice, but I'd do that part of the startup process as well (if that's what it takes to avoid this from happening).

Yes this sounds like a bug or something similar. The funny (so to say) part is that I can't reproduce it. This definitely does not happen on Linux and Mac OS X, so it must be a Windows-only problem. However I can't see it on my Windows development machines (Vista Business x64, Seven x64 and XP x86).

I'll keep trying to reproduce this thing, so stay tuned. A new version (1.6.1) is due in less than two weeks and of course this should not happen anymore.

I was just coming here to say the same thing.  Again I have lost my processing windows and the previous workaround does not work,  IMO this started with the floating windows and thus the floating windows are not worth the trouble for me!

My OS is Mac with a Macbook Pro and a 24 inch LED attached. - so it does happen with Mac:-(

I actually have a Linux box here at home, which is also on all the time. It wouldn't bother me to use PI there other than it's a very old computer and I need all the power from my stupid investment in this new computer to go into running this other thing called Windows Siete. Plus my linux box cannot run Photos.. I mean, notepad 

Thing is, if we all go and only use Linux, Juan wouldn't know about the bug in Windows, so we're suffering the Windows drama mainly so we can help nailing this down

I do like the floating top windows feature in 1.6, but I'd agree with Jack that of course, I'd rather them to be tied up to the IDE and not have the disappearing problem, than having them floating happy around the screen and then suddenly not showing up when called.

But I know what a bitch is trying to fix a problem you cannot duplicate...

I uninstalled PI 1.60 and then did a new download and re install.  But that has not fixed the problem!

If you have some sort of "debug" version of the executable and would like me to run some tests or something, just let me know.
Other than that, I wish you luck finding the problem. As long as I remember to reset my settings every session, I personally am not in a hurry.

Some good news.  Juan logged onto my computer and saw the problem.  Better yet he identified the issues causing it:-)  Has to do with the computer (maybe because of dual screens) assigning different coordinates to the tools so they sometimes open off the screen.  That is my primitive understanding of the problem.  Anyway he is working on a fix ASAP.
