Sorry folks,

but v1.6.0 (for me on Vista 64) is virtually unuseable. PI 'Core' crashes nearly every time I try to access ANY of the file I/O GUIs (including those within the likes of ImageIntegration and ImageCalibration).

So, I am going to have to revert to an early version of v1.5.9 - one that I have had running, NON-STOP, for nearly THREE MONTHS, until I had to uninstall it today.

The only other thing that happened today was an automatic upgrade to Vista64 Service Pack 2 - and that was because I decided to power-cycle the PC as well (again, for the first time in three months).

I wish I hadn't bothered (and, if I still had my shotguns, this pile of silicon cr@p would be full of lead by now >:()

I'll catch up with you after the next release - have fun

I saw the same behavior with Ubuntu, 32bits.

I am not sure whether the problem is related to the fact that I also accepted the full'Service Pack 2' update to Vista 64 - on reflection, I wish I hadn't.

Firefox was also very 'flakey' as well - it took MULTIPLE attempts to download the 32-bit and 64-nit v1.6.0 images. Download speed was fine, then Firfox went into a NEVER ENDING "checking for viruses" phase (during which Windows Resource Monitor only really showed 'disk activity' - everything else was more or less 'idle')

I have no idea whether I will be able to successfully 'roll back' to a pre-SP2 state.

Perhaos this is where I should just call it quits and splash out for a Win7 install (sorry, don't try and persuade me to go Linux - it is a nice concept, but I don't want to waste the next two years 'learning' a new OS, just because Windoze is so flakey >:()

Win7 definitely is an option. I have even upgraded my 9 year old PC. It feels considerably more responsive (but I doubt that it is really faster). It crashes very rarely compared to Vista and especially XP. It is now on all 3 of my systems, in 32 bits on the old PC, in 64bits on the two others.

Hi Niall,

This may provide some hints to find the origin of this problem. Which is your antivirus/firewall software? From the above sentence, I wouldn't be surprised if your antivirus program is messing with normal operation of some PixInsight routines. In particular, some multithreading schemes in PixInsight may fool some poor virus detection routines. For example, not too many applications out there carry out parallel disk I/O intensively.

Vista Service Pack 2 isn't part of the problem, at least not directly. I have SP2 installed on my Windows development machine. So I wouldn't follow the "rolling back" path because you may easily end with an unusable system if you uninstall a service pack.

Please try to follow these steps:

- First, use Preferences to disable parallel processing completely. You can also achieve the same result with the following command from the console:

parallel -disable

Perhaps the problems will disappear if you disable parallel processing. Otherwise:

- Disable all GUI special effects with Preferences. Some of the new interface animations are quite sophisticated, and chances are that your hardware is not tolerating them well, for some odd reason.

- Disable parallel disk I/O, also with Preferences.

If the problems persist, then disable your antivirus and/or firewall (disconnect your machine from any network, especially Internet, before doing this).

Let's see if we can diagnose and "isolate" the problem in this way.

Windows by itself is actually the very last reason to move to Linux :)

Viruses and piracy, and the fact that Windows bases a significant part of its market share on both "marketing concepts", is one of the first.

Hey Juan

In my case, it is happening with my old P3 machine (Ubuntu 9.10 x86). No parallel processors or disks IO. GUI effects disabled. And of course, here are no antiviruses.

Hi Carlos,

I think in your case the problem may be due to an incompatible glibc version. PixInsight requires the latest stable version: glibc 2.11. To know which version of glibc you are using, enter the following command:

Code: [Select]
ldd --version
It should say something like "ldd (GNU libc) 2.11" or similar.

If the problem isn't glibc, then cd to the bin directory where you have PixInsight installed and enter this:

Code: [Select]
export LD_LIBRARY_PATH=.:./lib; ldd ./PixInsight
Let me see the output of the above command. This will help us to diagnose the problem.

Hmmmm... still 18 days for the LTS version. I guess I'll wait untill then, and do a massive system update. Perhaps it will solve my problem with Eclipse :D

Hi all,

I have had partial success by pure chance. Whilst a 'crashed' instance of PI was shutting down, I mistakenly triggered a second instance at the same time (appearing on the toolbar with a (2) suffix). This second instance did NOT crash PI every time I tried to save an image.

So, I have actually been able to run through the necessary steps to calibrate a dataset, WITHOUT having PI crash on me.

I think a TOTAL uninstall, along with a 'FACTORY RESET' may cure my problems

I'll let you know how I get on

Another crashing on 64bit Ubuntu 9.10 user here.

cbaron@raon-cbaron:~/PixInsight/bin$ ./PixInsight.sh

** (<unknown>:2354): CRITICAL **: atk_object_set_name: assertion `name != NULL' failed

PixInsight Core 01.06.00.0592 (x86_64)
Copyright (C) 2003-2010 Pleiades Astrophoto

/home/cbaron/PixInsight/bin/./PixInsight: symbol lookup error: /usr/lib/libxml2.so.2: undefined symbol: gzopen64

Crashes everytime I try to open files too.

What distro are you running Juan where you'd be using 2.11? I'm tempted to upgrade to ubuntu 10.4 anyway, but I'm a bit leery of doing so at the office. Almost invariably X will break on my big desktop setup. Never seems to fail with every upgrade/new distro I try.

I guess I can give it a spin at home and see how I fare.

Cheers,
Chris

Maybe not upgrading just yet. Seems like there are more than a few outstanding issues with 10.04 beta2. Methinks I can wait the 15 days for its final release.

Cheers,
Chris

Yeah. I think that two weeks is not that much :P

I think that Juan uses Fedora. I'm thinking on installing it next time, maybe as a third OS. I'm reluctant to leave ubuntu :)
