Hi Niall,
Download speed was fine, then Firfox went into a NEVER ENDING "checking for viruses" phase
This may provide some hints to find the origin of this problem. Which is your antivirus/firewall software? From the above sentence, I wouldn't be surprised if your antivirus program is messing with normal operation of some PixInsight routines. In particular, some multithreading schemes in PixInsight may fool some poor virus detection routines. For example, not too many applications out there carry out parallel disk I/O intensively.
Vista Service Pack 2 isn't part of the problem, at least not directly. I have SP2 installed on my Windows development machine. So I wouldn't follow the "rolling back" path because you may easily end with an unusable system if you uninstall a service pack.
Please try to follow these steps:
- First, use Preferences to disable parallel processing completely. You can also achieve the same result with the following command from the console:
parallel -disable
Perhaps the problems will disappear if you disable parallel processing. Otherwise:
- Disable all GUI special effects with Preferences. Some of the new interface animations are quite sophisticated, and chances are that your hardware is not tolerating them well, for some odd reason.
- Disable parallel disk I/O, also with Preferences.
If the problems persist, then disable your antivirus and/or firewall (disconnect your machine from any network, especially Internet, before doing this).
Let's see if we can diagnose and "isolate" the problem in this way.
sorry, don't try and persuade me to go Linux - it is a nice concept, but I don't want to waste the next two years 'learning' a new OS, just because Windoze is so flakey
Windows by itself is actually the very last reason to move to Linux

Viruses and piracy, and the fact that Windows bases a significant part of its market share on both "marketing concepts", is one of the first.
