Color Profile Problems
« on: 2010 April 02 17:28:06 »
Hello,

Well, I finally took the plunge and purchased PI.  I am very happy with this software and my intent here is not to complain.

When I had the trial installed, there were no problems with color profiles and now, after uninstalling the trial and installing the commercial software, I cannot get the color management subsystem to initialize.

Here is some info that might be useful:
OS: Snow Leopard 10.6.3
Hardware: Macbook Pro (2009) with Apple 24" LED Cinema Display
PI: 1.05.09.0561 (for OS 10.6)

Startup sequence dialogs:
1.) Color Management:  PI could not find a valid monitor profile
2.) PI was unable to initialize the color management subsystem
3.) The profile file does not exist: /Library/ColorSync/Profiles/Displays/Color LCD-4272C80.icc

I am not sure what number 3 means since I am not using that profile on my primary monitor.  That is the profile for my laptop screen (which sometimes is the primary if I have the external monitor unplugged).  Did I confuse PI when I did this?

Also of note is that I recently upgraded from 10.6.2 to 10.6.3.  Not sure if this means anything...

I am using the stock profiles that Apple created and not any wild profiles created by a 3rd party calibration system like Spyder...

Here is a screen shot of color sync and primary monitor profile header:

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Regards,
Ken

Interesting as after years of PI use I had the same problem today???  Happened after I installed the latest Mac update.  I also noted when I tried to open a file PixInsight crashed.  So I uninstalled and re downloaded the Mac 32 bit install and re installed and all seems well???

I am running a Macbook Pro and the 24" LED also with same OS and same veer of PI

Hello Ken,

Quote
OS: Snow Leopard 10.6.3

This is a confirmed problem: After upgrading to OS X 10.6.3, color management is broken in PixInsight.

It seems the guys at Apple have made something "cool" to display color profile management on OS X 10.6.3. While I figure out what the heck is happening here, here's the workaround if you experience problems with color management upon PixInsight startup:

- Open System Preferences.

- Select the Displays item on the Hardware section (second row).

- Select the Color section (second tab).

- Here you'll see a list with your current display profiles. Now click the Calibrate button to the right side of the dialog box.

- Follow all the steps to calibrate your monitor with the ColorSync utility (brightness, gamma, etc.). This will generate a valid color profile for your monitor which will carry the "Calibrated" suffix. Now select this new profile for your monitor.

With this procedure PixInsight will be able to start normally. It will detect your new "Calibrated" monitor profile as the system monitor profile.

Now you can open the ColorManagementSetup tool (from the Edit menu) and select the correct color management settings, if necessary.

I hope this problem won't happen on systems with hardware calibration. If it happens, the solution would be to regenerate the calibrated profiles with the calibration hardware's utility software. It seems the 10.6.3 upgrade is changing (damaging?) display color profiles in some way, but I still have to investigate this problem in more depth.

Sorry for the inconvenience.
