What Tool for Removing Blooms?
« on: 2010 March 29 07:51:52 »
I searched the messages and could not find any addressing bloom removal. Is there a tool for this or one coming in 1.60?

Thanks,
Steve

I usually remove blooms with Maxim batch processing prior to working in PI.  Other than that I have also used the clone tool, but you really need to magnify the bloom and work carefully.  It is not convenient for a large number of bloomed stars.  I know a bloom tool has been discussed and is on the wish list

Not yet. But we have a deblooming tool on the drawing board. This is under experimental development and this is the first time I post these tests here on the forum.

Before - bright blooming

After - bright blooming
http://pixinsight.com/tmp/20100205/02.jpg

Before - dark bloomings
http://pixinsight.com/tmp/20100205/03.jpg

After - dark bloomings

The preliminary implementation is promising but I have absolutely no time schedule available :)

Jack,

I too have removed blooms in MaxIm but using Ron Wodaski's Bloom Removal plug-in which works much better in my opinion. The issue is that when the data is combined and stretched, the stars are usually a little flat on top or there is a slight spike left. Usually I just bring the image into PS and use the Smudge tool to correct this. Maybe I'm missing an important feature but I don't see how I can see what the intended use of each tool/process is. This probably goes back to my very first post in looking for a glossary of terms. Something along the lines of:

Image Intergration: Tool used to combine multiple images into one using Average, Median or other method
Screen Transfer Function: A non destructive means of displaying the image data, use auto for a good start
Dynamic Background Extraction: Process used to remove gradients from the image
and so on........

This would just make it a bit easier to find the proper tools/processes to apply to processing the image. At least for those of use that are familiar with image processing using other software. Listing them as a basic or advanced tool/process would be benifical as well. Just some thoughts.

Thanks,
Steve

Hi Juan,

That tool for blooming removal looks nice, specially for dark blooming. I am really interested on it because dark blooming is one of the problems I have when imaging with my Orion Starshoot DSI color v2. I have not still found any software for fixing it. Some times I use the clone stamp tool of PI, but ... it is not good enought.

Regards.

Fernando ;)

Somehow I missed this thread! Very nice results, Juan. Are you using Greyc as base?

Is there anymore news regarding this function - deblooming????

MaxIm DL can do this but its very heavy handed and the results aren't great.

It because of this I'm looking at CCDstack, it has a very nice deblooming function.

Any chance this can be put out for beta testing???

Best regards

Neil.

Some time ago it was decided to drop the development of this tool. Seeing how you use MaxIm I'd suggest using Ron Wodaski's DeBloomer add-on for MaxIm. It's posted here http://www.newastro.com/downloads/products.php and works for version 4 & 5 just fine. I've used it for a long time with my ST10XME. This is a free add-on so give it a try. Best I've used including CCDStack's method.

How do you use it with MaxIm 5???

I couldn't get the plugin to work at all any tips would be appreciated.

I still cant really understand why they have dropped development of such as obvious tool for astro-imaging?

Regards

What couldn't you get to work? You installed it so it shows up in the Plug-in menu OK? There is also the debloomer pdf file, did you get that? Do a search for deblooming and you'll see the whole thread. Forget that, this is that thread! Link found for the PDF file is here http://elynxsdk.free.fr/datas/debloom/debloomer.pdf

Maybe there is a volunteer who implements the algorithm that is pointed to in http://pixinsight.com/forum/index.php?topic=1300.msg6616#msg6616 ...
