process documentation

I purchased pixinsight and have been going through the video tutorials.  I have two simple questions:
1. Is there a location where I can find details of the operating controls which are available in various process scripts.  Example a trous Wavelet transform has options like layer, bias, noise, large scale transfer function, deringing.  Various controls within each.  Is there something that documents these controls?

2.  If I wanted to modify a mask back in photoshop, what format should I save the file in to transfer back and forth between photoshop and pixinsight so that minimal data loss or degredation occur?

I can answer #2.
Just save the mask as 16 bit TIFF for PS.
You won't loose anything when you bring it back in PS.

Sadly (or happily  )...the best answer to 1 is to use a fairly small `preview`...or actually a bunch of them.
Changing the parameters in the process then can be seen quickiy,and one can scroll back and forth between the previews,`tweaking`the settings.
Happily,after a while,you start to just `know-remember`what sort of settings work on what sort of data...
Also on the top left (just recently discovered by me..!!) is a `back`button,which will undo the last process,or even the last series of processes.
One exception is `HDR wavelet transformation`....
Here the effect in `preview`is not representative of what happens when applied to the whole image...One needs to bash out a few `clone`images...this can be a bit slow with larger files...
My 2 megapixel camera is a `good thing`in this case..

Obviously a large(r) CPU helps...(!!)
I think for some of the Pix pros..(Jedi) an understanding of how Pix analyzes and handles the data at a `wavelet`level helps to understand all these settings.

On some of the processes one can see the cause and effects related to changes to the controls.  On other processes a person may not be able to properly assess what is the actual result.  Hence it becomes a little hard to determine how to change a parameter.  Someone has to know what these parameters actually control.  There must be some documentation somewhere.  Some processes have a mouse over help which again helps.  I'm just wondering if other documentation exists somewhere else that I haven't found yet.  I was just using the wavelet tool as an example where control parameters are listed just like any other process.

layer- This separates the image into various components. Increasing divides the image into to more/finer component parts.
Layer 1 is the smallest wavelet
bias - Main control positive sharpens.
noise- Noise removal tool
large scale transfer function-  I don't use this
deringing. - Limits deringing artifact (also limit the sharpening)

This is toughest tool in the bunch to master.

I WOULD add that a lot of the `mouseover`help bits are a little shaky in terms of content...only a line or two...which seems kind of `cheap`of their authors,really.
`regularization threshold in sigma units`is not exactly an all encompassing description of what setting I should choose in Deconvolution...just as an example.
Some of the mouseovers say next to nothing ( )......which is kind of funny...but not at the time !!
Could these be `fleshed out`a little..?
Could a page be set up somewhere,with chapters devoted to more info,other peoples knowledge/experience about some of these choices..??
It could be a collaborative sort of thing,no ??

In short,I think our poster has an EXCELLENT point here...the longer I think about it !

Hi all,

I think this is where the PixInsight 'Wiki' pages come into play - that was really the fundamental reason behind them. The 'user manual' would be a globally cooperative effort, fleshing out the Wiki pages with our cumulative knowledge.

Once there was enough information there, Juan could start incorporating the information into the heart of PI itself.

Its either that, or - as Juan has said so often before - the whole development process of PI grinds to a halt, whilst the 'documentation' is written, published, read, assimilated, corrected, republished, etc., etc.

PI is too 'dynamic' for that in my opinion.

Ok who is the Wiki Master?
Someone needs to develope a simple template for each module briefly explaining what each option does. Perhaps a image with text below so we could edit and re-edit the explainations and tips.
Juan and the other auther could tweek it for accuracy.
We need someone to get this started.
I would do it but I am not too good with HTML documents.
I have only MS word at work.

The template is already there.

Just start editing the page.  See the http://wiki.pixinsight.com/tiki-index.php?page=StarAlignment as an example.

And yes -- there needs to be a lot of filling in.

(on a different note, does the image on the landing page of the wiki look okay? -- it looks like the image file might have been corrupted.)
