hi everyone,

i'm running pixinsight standard on OSX 10.5. when i start up pixinsight i get the following message:

"Color Management: PixInsight could not find a valid monitor profile."

followed by another warning that color management is completely turned off.

sure enough the colors all look different when i export my images to photoshop or other tools. has anyone seen this before and is there any workaround? the monitor profile i am using was created using a gretag eyeOne.

Hi,

the monitor profile i am using was created using a gretag eyeOne

With high probability, the generated profile is invalid. In particular, the problem is that it is missing the mmod (MakeAndModel) standard ICC profile tag. See this post where a similar problem was reported, also with an Eye One monitor calibrator.

If the profile doesn't have a mmod tag that identifies it as a valid monitor profile, then Mac OS X won't report it as the primary monitor profile to PixInsight, and hence PixInsight won't know how to characterize your monitor. As I explained in the above linked post, other applications silently eat this problem and continue working under uncertain conditions (or perhaps they know a different way to use the monitor profile even if it is invalid, that I am not aware of). However, PixInsight's policy is to inform the user about what's happening.

The only workaround to this problem is replacing the invalid profile with a valid monitor ICC profile. Could you upload your profile, so I can analyze it?

thanks for the reply, i guess i should have searched first. let me take a look at the profile with apple's tool and see what, if anything, is there for mmod. i can upload it as well.

Edit: of course you are right, there's no mmod.

i kind of thought maybe the profile was bad before i posted, so i did try switching to what i thought was one of the apple-generated profiles and i got the same message, which led me to believe that it might not be related to the eyeOne... but i may have not chosen the right one. anyway gretag's  software is so crappy i can totally believe it would make a bad profile.

incidentally i am at kind of a loss as to what to do for color management. the eyeOne died (red filter has degraded) and i've read nothing but bad reviews about the colormunki's software. does anyone have any advice regarding color matching hardware/software for macosx?
