Somethings gone wrong with the latest update.  I installed it tonight. I usually run it from a Process.xosm shortcut on my desktop which is a saved project file with just process icons in it (no images). Now clicking that desktop icon causes PixInsight to try to re-install rather than open with the project file.

I have the same problem.
1. The operating system WIN10. There are workflow icons on the desktop.
2. With the latest update of Pix 1.8.8.4, when you try to open the saved workflow icons, the program goes into reconfiguration and WIN10 restarts the computer.
3. After the reboot, everything works. I am watching the version of Pix 1.8.8.3, which offers an update.
4. The first automatic update of 6 files is successful. Saved workflow icons open and everything works.
5. I am watching the version of Pix 1.8.8.4, which offers an update. If you agree to the second update, then after the update all problems are repeated.
Sincerely, Dmitri.

Yes, this happens after a recent Windows update. This looks like a Windows bug, which is completely out of our control.

The only workaround is not trying to open these files directly from Windows Explorer or the Desktop. Run PixInsight first and open files from the application. There are no problems by doing this.

We cannot reproduce this problem on any of our working and testing machines running Windows 10. This is a machine-specific issue, probably associated with your graphics drivers.

Hello Juan!
Thank you for your quick response.
Excuse me because I'm not a programmer ...
But it seems to me that the problem is updating Pixinsight.
The impossibility of starting Pixisight and saved processes from the desktop is caused by the installation of the following update:
https://pixinsight.com/update/1.8.8-4/
BatchFrameAcquisition script version 0.2.1. (update/bugfix)
Now I have installed all the updates of Pixinsight 1.8.8-4 except for the above. And everything works for me.
Thank you for your awesome Pixinsight.
Dmitriy

Hi Dmitriy,

BatchFrameAcquisition is a script, so it is a plain text file. A single plain text file cannot change the behavior of an operating system to open files by launching an application when you double-click on a file. This does not make any sense.

What I am trying to say is that the problem you are experiencing, which is perfectly reproducible after the latest Window 10 update (in fact I can reproduce it on all of our Win10 machines), cannot be caused by the BatchFrameAcquisition script update. It is an erratic behavior that is completely beyond our control. There is nothing we can do to prevent or solve it. The only advice I can give to really help you avoid these problems is probably not what you'd like to hear.

My PI is not crashing but it continuously downloads updates. It downloads and installs the 1.8.8-4 update then, after I restart PI, it says I have new updates, then downloads and installs them and takes me back to version 1.8.8-3. It cycles between downloading 6 updates and 10 updates every time I start PI. I just stopped saying yes to downloading 1.8.8-4.

UPDATE:

Well, I've playing with this and found a cure, kind of. The problem only happens when I start PI by clicking on PIProcesses.xpsm. Then Windows does something that causes PI to revert to 1.8.8-3. If I simply start PI (after the 1.8.8-4 update) by running the Pixinsight.exe file, then all is well but, I have to load my PIProcesses.xpsm file manually.

You well described what is happening with me.
Check out my previous post. Maybe you canceling one update out of 10 will solve the problem?

These problems are now fixed. I have uploaded new installation packages for version 1.8.8-4 to our software distribution server. Please uninstall PixInsight, download the new package, and install it. You'll only have to apply two documentation updates. Sorry for the inconvenience.

Hi Juan,
I just uninstalled and installed the new package
Still getting the error on exit.
Are there any logs that might be helpful?

The latest 1.8.8-4 installation package fixes recent issues on macOS and Windows, as described here, which have nothing to do with the problem you are reporting. Unfortunately, this thread has been used to report different and unrelated issues.

As noted before, the problem you are reporting does not happen under normal working conditions, and we cannot reproduce it. Try updating your graphics drivers to their latest available versions; this usually fixes similar problems. If your computer has an integrated Intel HD graphics adapter along with a discrete graphics card (such as an NVIDIA or AMD card), try disabling the integrated adapter from the BIOS, if possible, or from Windows. Intel HD graphics drivers are very problematic on laptops running Windows.

I just rebooted Pixinsigt on a different computer (Another processor, another motherboard, AMD graphics card instead of Nvidia). My problem is still reproducing.
As I wrote, refusal to install a file update
https://pixinsight.com/update/1.8.8-4/
BatchFrameAcquisition script version 0.2.1. (update / bugfix)
solves this problem.
It is possible that the reason is different, but it is the installation of this update that makes this reason active.
Dmitriy.
