How do I reduce star sizes?
« on: 2009 September 25 18:09:05 »

Hi,

due to a variety of reasons my stars are a bit bloated. I'd like to reduce their size a bit. Noel Carboni's tools for Photoshop include what seems to be an effective utility for that although I haven't used it myself. I tried deconvolution but the side effects are too severe. What do you suggest I try?

Thanks!
Best,

    Sander

Morphological Transformation using Erosion usually does the trick for me.

To soften the edges, and reduce a bit the size, use several iterations of the Erosion operator, with a low amount value. Take a look at the psm file I uploaded for balt (see the galery), I use a very similar scheme to decrease the size of stars due to tracking errors. Also I used a pass of deconvolution.

Hi Sander,

like the others have said...erosion is a good one....use a bigish softish start mask though.

Also, maybe the new StarHaloReducer script is worth a try?

In the examples given, it seems to reduce the size of the big stars you select.

Cheers
