NRW PROCESSING? + AURORA PROCESSING

I'm having problems accessing RAW data images from a Nikon camera (A1000) with images saved as NRW files. I’ve just returned back from Norway with some amazing images of the Northern Lights which I am now trying to process with Pixinsight. I have the preferences set to pure RAW in Format Explorer so the files open up as gray scale ok. But both before and after debayering the data is very noisy and barely recognisable compared to what is viewed on the camera itself.  On another camera (Panasonic Lumix), the saved images are RW2 and I have no problem with these at all (see attached image).
Unfortunately the best images are on the other camera so how can I process NRW files?
Also, has anyone processed Aurora images with Pixinsight (especially getting the right color balance)?

you might need to use adobe camera raw to convert to DNG... and then PI should be able to open them.

well i guess it's part of photoshop, but maybe the nikon bundled tools can probably save as DNG? i don't own a nikon camera so i can't check.

in the worst case the nikon tools can probably save as tiff but they probably stretch the image and apply a gamma curve, at least by default. if i remember right, you can turn that stuff off in the Canon tools so you can at least get an unstretched 16-bit TIFF out of the canon software.
