Windows 8.1 and PixInsight Incompatibility
« on: 2019 March 21 11:29:25 »
I have a MS Surface Pro 3 running Windows 8.1 and frequently get PixInsight Qt5Widgets.dll crashes. I've been told that PixInsight is not tested against Windows 8.1 but works well with Windows 10. So I'm looking into purchase Windows 10 to run on my Surface Pro 3.

There seem to be multiple versions of Windows including (1) Windows 10 Home, (2) Windows 10 Pro, and (3) Windows 10 S. Before taking a cost hit can anyone recommend which Windows 10 version will work with my MS Surface Pro 3 and will be compatible with PixInsight?

Thanks in advance for your help.
Bob

Hi,

I would go for Windows 10 Pro.  The "home" edition is a little watered-down and not sure about the Windows 10 S version.  The "QtWidgets" error is related to Apple Quick-time.

has nothing to do with Apple or Quicktime. Qt is the open-source user interface library that Pixinsight is built on. the problem comes when other applications (like some of the bundled Dell shovel-ware) are also built on Qt and include downrev Qt dlls which conflict with the Qt dlls that pixinsight needs to use.

Rob, Thanks for your input. Since I'm using a MS Surface Pro 3 where does the Dell software come in??
Thanks,
Bob

PixInsight should work fine on Windows 10 Home & Pro (and also Enterprise, and I have used it on Windows Server 2016 as well).

Windows 10 S is a "locked down" version of Windows that only runs software installed through the Microsoft Store.  PixInsight will not run on this version.

I hope that this helps,

Thanks for all of your inputs. I ended up moving PixInsight onto my Windows 10 laptop and it seems to be working well.
Thanks,
Bob
