Local Normalization freezing PC
« on: 2018 January 21 04:43:49 »
Hi, When applying Local Normalization to my lights as per this guide:

http://www.lightvortexastronomy.com/tutorial-pre-processing-calibrating-and-stacking-images-in-pixinsight.html#Section6

My PC freezes, the task manager display stops changing, the mouse won't move etc. Memory is in the 90% and above region during this task. Pixinsight generates about 10 Normalization files but no more. I have the reset the computer.

My PC is:

AMD 8320FX 8 Core 3.50gh
8GB DDR3 1300mhz Ram
AMD Radeon HD 6670

Any Advice would be appreciated.

You could try running several small batches as a workaround...

Thanks, I'll try that. However is this a problem with my PC (not enough RAM) or a PixInsight bug? The next upgrade in RAM is a bit pricey for me at the moment.

Hi,

I have not seen your issue, but when I do a large batch of LN images, my laptop generates a message "Not responding" and the screen sometimes changes view.  It just means the PC is really busy and if I leave the PC alone the LN finishes.  LN puts a bit of strain on the PC but with a little patience the job completes.

Same for me. Our processing machine has 64mb RAM and when I'm running dozens of files through local normalization it ties up the machine.

Thanks. I'll try letting it run for a while then.

If your running Windows and you need access to the computer while running a very processor intense operation in PI you can deselect cpu cores from being used by PI in the task manager. This will allow you to operate other programs. Of course if those programs are cpu intensive you might need to limit their use also. Not a great solution but it works when used with care. When I've used this in the past Windows seems to work out the memory requirements.

Here is what that looks like in Windows 7 and Windows 10.
