Cannot save project
« on: 2018 January 18 11:50:25 »
I cannot save my project, I get the message "unable to open file, the systems cannot find the file specified" see attached image.

The project has been open for a few days and the computer has been suspended overnight several times, it was never a problem before.

Anyone experienced something similar?

Have you tried to do a "Save As" for the project instead of "Save" and give it a new name?

I was unable to save it overall. I lost all of my processing.  :-[ :-[ :-[

My guess is that the operating system deleted those temp files before time (for whatever reason).

Perhaps pixsinsight should store temp files directly in the directory the project is saved in order to avoid this annoyance.

i think this might be the first time that i've ever heard a windows user have the .swp files deleted out from under them. on OSX it happens as part of the weekly or monthly system disk cleanup...

you can change the directory where .swp files are stored in the global preferences... it might be the safe thing for you to do, to possibly eliminate this problem by putting the files where windows would probably not auto-delete them.

I did not know that option for the SWP files existed. I will change it to some folder outside the OS folders.

The project was open for many days with the computer going many times into sleep mode.

Anyways, my fault I guess for not saving often (or at all within several days, what was I thinking...) hehehe

Thanks for the tips.

Maybe some kind of disk space management software considered the swap files as something useless which needed to be deleted.

I've had this problem a bunch of times, although today is the first time I've lost my project.  I'll follow Rob's suggestion to change the save folder.  So if I simply add an extra swap storage directory in Global Preferences>Directories and Network, is that enough?  Or do I need to remove from the list the AppData folder that it defaults to?  (I agree with the OP that it would probably be better if this weren't the default setup in PI.  Losing work is never fun!)

in the case of OS X, you'd have to delete the original location. but 1) i think juan may have fixed this (i did a clean install on a new computer and i can see that the default .swp directory is not /tmp, which gets auto-cleaned by OS X) and 2) you are on windows (based on your saying "AppData") and to my knowledge windows itself does not delete files (or we'd hear about it here with much greater frequency)

so i wonder if you have some antivirus or other management software which might have cleaned up that directory? (as dld proposes above)

I already had the problem.  As a fallback solution, when all else no longer helps, you can save the most important images individually and the processes as a collective icon as well. At least nothing is lost.

OK my suggestion is just a stopgap. But does anyone know if the history can be stored separately, otherwise one could suggest this.

While the best method is a project you can save the history for each image from the 'New Instance' triangle in the history explorer. The one down side to this is the history explorer does not have any settings for scripts. It does for standard tools though. That history process icon can be saved.

Yes, the history was lost. As matter of fact, I "undid" ctrl-z some of the processes of the image and it was working until it reached the point of the missing images. At which point pixinsight just displayed an error "cannot find file blah blah blah" this error was displayed over and over again infinitely. Had to ctrl alt del pixinsight at the end, as I could not click anywhere else.

So, all was lost. :'(

Of course Mike, you're right. I did not think about that.
