Images fail to register
« on: 2017 December 14 17:13:54 »
I am trying to process images from a new Pentax K-1 camera (35Mp) and I am using batch preprocessing. I get to the image registration section and the program fails with the message saying cannot match stars. I have tried to increase the noise level settings but without success. Can anyone suggest what other things I can try?

1) make sure the subs have actually been debayered (do _c_d.xisf exist? do they look right?)
2) open one of the _c_d files and then open up StarAlignment and switch it to "Detected Stars" mode and drag the triangle to the subexposure. look at the resultant image to see where SA thinks the stars are. tweak the noise parameters and star peak parameters and iterate...

Hi Rob,
I have just read on a recent PI forum post that the dcraw import is probably causing the problem, as it clips the images. I apparently need to run LibRaw but I don't know how to do that. Can you assist?

DCRAW should not be clipping the images, i think you may have misunderstood something. unless DCRAW simply can't open files from a K-1 which is a possibity. libraw support is something that Juan has to add to PI, it's not something that users can do.

if it turns out that DCRAW does not know how to open a file from a K-1, then your best bet is to convert all the files to DNG somehow. i don't know if pentax or adobe has software that can do that... next best is to convert all your files to TIFF but most tiff converters are going to debayer and possibly stretch the data, which is not desirable at all...

Thanks Rob,
I checked the calibrated and debayered files and it seems the flats I have been using screw up the calibration process. Seems to work better without flats.

ok good - yes that is always a 3rd possibility, that something is wrong with the calibration frames and the calibrated images are trashed...
