Star Alignment unable to find a putative etc..
« on: 2017 November 08 03:11:38 »
Hello gurus,
It's been a while :) Been focussing on observing visually but ysterday the bug struck me again and I had a go at imaging a wide field M52 and I've been trying very hard to get the images stacked but PI is being a little bit stubborn (I myself am of course innocent  ::)).

I followed the howto in http://www.lightvortexastronomy.com/tutorial-pre-processing-calibrating-and-stacking-images-in-pixinsight.html and the Star Alignment procedure keeps telling me that it can't find enough star matches, though it initially finds >2000 stars. I tried relaxing the RANSAC parameters and found a hint to change the descriptor type to triangles in Star Matching but none of this helped. I used a ZenithStar 80 on a Star Adventurer, which -I know- is pushing it, but iirc, I have been able to stack worse data.

I uploaded two of my corrected calibrated and debayered images to wetransfer, maybe someone can see what I'm doing wrong. If it's not enough, I can upload the entire data set. The first image is the one I'm using as reference image.

I used a superbias out of 29 biases, 29 darks and 15 flats.

without looking at the file, it's likely that SA is seeing hot pixels in the images and detecting them as stars. you can try adjusting the noise thresholds in SA to see if you can get it to ignore the noise.
