the 'Inside PixInsight' book for a complete beginner
« on: 2017 October 19 12:44:31 »
Reading the reviews for the book 'Inside PixInsight' by Warren Keller. Some comments say that the book is very good, but it already assumes some familiarity with this app.

I am completely unfamiliar with PI. I do have some experience with image processing. I've done planetary imaging for a while. What resource would you say is helpful to bridge the gap between zero knowledge of PI, and the level where the 'Inside PixInsight' book is helpful and easy to use?

+1 for LVA website - easy to follow and well explained.  It assumes you know nothing.  Work through the first 4 item on the tutorials page and you will have a very good understanding of how to use and navigate PI.  You will get a lot more out of the book that way.  I recommend learning how to calibrate and stack subs manually first, instead of using the automated script (BatchPreProcessing).  There are also a lot of good vids on youtube, but some are better than others.  Check out the AstroImaging Channel for some good ones.

Good Luck!

Florin, while I say in the introduction that 'some' familiarity with astro-imaging practice is assumed, I don't feel this is necessary for the PI program specifically. Inside PixInsight can indeed be used successfully by someone who has never ventured into the program. It's for people exactly like yourself, and for those more advanced. Along with others here, I also recommend Harry's tutorial's. Kayron is extremely bright and his LVA site always offers a good 'insight' or two.
Best always, Warren

Hi Florin;
Inside PixInsight is the book for you on how to become knowledgeable and in time, proficient in PI.
After working through the calibration part of Warren's excellent book, I put together a "Cook Book" on the use of the PI processes. After performing the set up and then performing the Process, I did a screen capture and then printed it. All these settings for each process came from Inside PI.

One thing that would have been useful in Warren's book, would have put "Cook Book"  at the end of a section or a brief "How To" or "Do This". As I read the chapters and applied them, I would make notes in his book. Such as "Note This", and 'How To".

These became the basis of my "Cook Book". Many of my screen shots look just like those in the book. What my cook book does is distills many words into a picture.

Try not to be intimidated by the vast amount of information you will be consuming. Warren gives you in the early chapters the basic information as to why all these steps are necessary. In so doing, you will process your low contrast and noisy sub-frame exposures into clean and beautiful images.

So, there is no need to think that if you do not have extensive experience using some other image processing program and work flow, that this will be impossible for you. PI does have a steep learning curve, but it will plateau and you will breath easy.

If you would like, I can either mail you or email you my screen shots with settings for you to put into a binder. Every time I process my astro images, this "Cook Book" is in front of me. Also Inside PI is next to me to.
