DBE and lack of true 'undo' functionality
« on: 2009 May 17 09:35:12 »

Hi,

I've been playing with the new DBE and it's really great, in general. The problem is that you can not easily do step-wise improvements when you choose to modify the target image. When you try to undo PI will tell you the image is being used by a dynamic process and doesn't proceed. You then have to cancel the DBE process, and undo the subtraction. Now all your DBE samples are gone and you have to start from scratch.

I realize there are at least 2 ways around this:

- store the DBE process as a new icon before applying it
- don't modify the target image until you like the result. Try out your DBE sessions by creating new images, then re-apply the correct settings with a 'modify' setting

These are both fine for users who are comfortable with PI but they don't seem logical to new users, I think.

I summary I think it would be nice if you could somehow undo the target image correction without loosing the entire DBE process. I'm not use the framework allows this but I thought I'd bring this up for discussion.
Best,

I agree. That is just the way I usually like to use DBE, and I have seen the undo issue as well.

Thanks Georg. I'm writing a tutorial for PI and that's how this really came to light. It became difficult to explain how to do an iteratively improving DBE.

This is what I came up with for my article:

- run DBE without the 'replace target image' check box selected until you find the DBE settings you like
- re-run DBE with 'replace target image' checked or proceed with the new image you prefer

Really simple and quite effective. If you want to replace the target image you can even use PixelMath to stick the version you like best into the target in a quick operation. I hadn't considered that for the article, it just occurred to me.

Hi Sander

That's the way I always do it and some times put a dbe  instance on the corrected image to see which samples are causing me a problem!
Look forward to see your article
